trackwasfinallyopenedinJanuary1863.Asteamtrainpulledthecarsalongthefastundergroundtrackwhichwas6kilometers(3.7miles)long.About30,000peoplegotonthesubwaythefirstday.Ridersweretreatedtocomfortableseats(standingupwhilethetrainwasmovingwasnotallowed),andpleasantdecorationsinsideeachofthecars.However,thesmokefromtheenginesoonfilledtheairinthetunnels(隧道)withashandsoot(煤灰),aswellaschemicalgases.Fanshadtobeputinthetunnelslatertokeeptheaircleanenoughforpeopletobreathe.Evenwithitsproblems,ridingintheUndergrounddidcatchon.Itcarried9millionridersinitsfirstyear.
