Intheearly18thcentury，Englishspellingwasnotstandardized.Differencesbecamenoticeable（明显的，显著的）afterthepublishingofinfluentialdictionaries.CurrentBritishEnglishspellingsfollow，forthemostpart，thoseofSamuelJohnson'sDictionaryoftheEnglishLanguage（1755）．ManyofthenowcharacteristicAmericanEnglishspellingswereintroduced，althoughnot，forthemostpart，created，byNoahWebsterinDictionaryoftheEnglishLanguageof1828.

Websterwasastrongproponentofspellingreformforreasonsbothphilologicalandnationalistic.ManyspellingchangesproposedintheUSbyWebstertheearly20thcenturybytheSimplifiedSpellingBoard，nevercaughton.Amongtheadvocatesof

spellingreforminEngland，theinfluencesofthosewhopreferredtheNorman（orAngloFrench）spellingsofcertainwordsproveddecisive.SubsequentspellingadjustmentsintheUKpresentdayUSspelling，andviceversa（反的）．WhileinmanycasesAmericanEnglishdeviated（偏离；脱离）inthe19thcenturyfrommainstreamBritishspelling，ontheotherretainedolderforms.

ThespellingsystemsofCommonwealthcountries，forthemostpart，closelyresembletheBritishsystem.InCanada，”spellingsarealsoused.AdditionalinformationonCanadianandAustralianspellingisprovidedthroughoutthearticle.
