Ateamofscientistsfrom80nationsrecentlyreportedtotheUnitedNationsthatalayerofozoneintheatmosphere,whichprotectshumansfromharmfullevelsofultravioletradiation,willbethinnerovertheUnitedStatesthissummer.Thethinner1ayerallowsmoreultravioletraysfromthesuntoreachtheearth.Theextraamountofultravioletradiationcouldcauseanincreaseinthenumberofcasesofskincancer.

Scientistsfirstbecameconcernedabouttheozonelayerinthemid-1980swhenaholewasdiscoveredinthelayeraboveAntarcticaduringthewinter.Theholewascausedbychemicalsusedinrefrigeratorsandairconditioners.Whenthesechemicalsaresentoutintotheatmosphere,theyproducegasesthatdestroytheozone.

ConcernabouttheprotectiveozonelayerrosemorerecentlywhendatafromsatellitesandgroundstationsshowedthatozonelevelsweredroppingoverareasotherthanAntarctica.LowozonelevelswererecordedinthespringandsummerovertheUnitedStatesandoverotherpopulatedareasintheworld.

Althoughmanycountrieshavealreadybegunstoppingtheuseorozone—destroying

chemicals,thenewfindingsareexpectedtoadvancethetimetableforatotalbanofthechemicals.

2.Pollution

Peopletodayallovertheworldarebeginningtohearandlearnmoreandmoreabouttileproblemofpollution.Pollutioniscausedeitherbytherelease(排放)ofpletelynewandoftenartificialsubstancesintotheenvironment,orbyreleasinggreatlyincreasedamountsofanaturalsubstance.suchasoilfromoiltankersintothesea.Withthedevelopmentofmodernindustry,manyofthegoodsandmachinesweneedanduseinourdailylivesarecreatinganumberofwasteproductswhichupsettheenvironmentbalance.Manyofthesewasteproductscanbepreventedifpeoplepaymoreattention,butclearlywhilemoreandmorenewgoodsareproducedandmadeplex,therewillbenewdangerouswastestobethrownaway,forexample,thewasteproductsfromnuclearpowerstations.Manypeople,therefore,seepollutionasonlypartofalargerandmoreplexproblem.

Thereisnodoubtthatmuchofthepollutioncausedcouldbecontrolledifonlypanies,individualsandgovernmentwouldmakemoreefforts.Inthehomethereisanobviousneedtocontrollitterandwaste.Foodeswrappedupthreeorfourtimesinpackagesthatallhavetobegotridof;

drinksareincreasinglysoldinbottlesortimeswhichcannotbereused.Thisnotonlycausesalitterproblem,butalsoisagreatwasteofresources,intermsofglass,metalsandpaper.

Advertisinghashelpedthisprocessbypersuadingmanyofusnotonlytobuythingsweneitherwantnorneed.butalsotothrowawaymuchofwhatwedobuy.Pollutionandwastebinetobeaproblemeveryonecanhelptosolvebycuttingunnecessarybuying,overconsumptionandcarelessreleaseoftheproductsweuseinourdailylives.
