Scientistsfirstbecameconcernedabouttheozonelayerinthemid-1980swhenaholewasdiscoveredinthelayeraboveAntarcticaduringthewinter．Theholewascausedbychemicalsusedinrefrigeratorsandairconditioners．Whenthesechemicalsaresentoutintotheatmosphere,theyproducegasesthatdestroytheozone．

ConcernabouttheprotectiveozonelayerrosemorerecentlywhendatafromsatellitesandgroundstationsshowedthatozonelevelsweredroppingoverareasotherthanAntarctica．LowozonelevelswererecordedinthespringandsummerovertheUnitedStatesandoverotherpopulatedareasintheworld．

Althoughmanycountrieshavealreadybegunstoppingtheuseorozone—destroying

chemicals,thenewfindingsareexpectedtoadvancethetimetableforatotalbanofthechemicals．

2．Pollution

Peopletodayallovertheworldarebeginningtohearandlearnmoreandmoreabouttileproblemofpollution．Pollutioniscausedeitherbytherelease（排放）ofpletelynewandoftenartificialsubstancesintotheenvironment,orbyreleasinggreatlyincreasedamountsofanaturalsubstance．suchasoilfromoiltankersintothesea．Withthedevelopmentofmodernindustry，manyofthegoodsandmachinesweneedanduseinourdailylivesarecreatinganumberofwasteproductswhichupsettheenvironmentbalance．Manyofthesewasteproductscanbepreventedifpeoplepaymoreattention，butclearlywhilemoreandmorenewgoodsareproducedandmadeplex，therewillbenewdangerouswastestobethrownaway，forexample，thewasteproductsfromnuclearpowerstations．Manypeople，therefore,seepollutionasonlypartofalargerandmoreplexproblem．

Thereisnodoubtthatmuchofthepollutioncausedcouldbecontrolledifonlypanies,individualsandgovernmentwouldmakemoreefforts．Inthehomethereisanobviousneedtocontrollitterandwaste．Foodeswrappedupthreeorfourtimesinpackagesthatallhavetobegotridof；

drinksareincreasinglysoldinbottlesortimeswhichcannotbereused．Thisnotonlycausesalitterproblem，butalsoisagreatwasteofresources，intermsofglass，metalsandpaper．
