Sinceasolarcellhasawavelength-dependentresponse,itsperformanceissignificantlyaffectedbythespectraldistributionoftheincidentradiation,whichinnaturalsunlightvarieswithseveralfactorssuchaslocation,weather,timeofyear,timeofday,orientationofthereceivingsurface,etc.,andwithasimulatorvarieswithitstypeandconditionsofuse.Iftheirradianceismeasuredeitherwithathermopile-typeradiometer(thatisnotspectrallyselective)orwithareferencesolarcell,thespectralirradiancedistributionoftheincominglightmustbeknowninordertomakethenecessarycorrectionstoobtaintheperformanceofthePVdeviceunderthereferencesolarspectraldistributiondefinedinthisstandardasspecified.Itisalsopossibleforauserorarraydesigner,usingthespectralresponseofthecells,tocomputewithinareasonabletolerancetheperformanceofaPVdevicewhenexposedtolightofanyotherknownspectralirradiancedistribution.
