thereissurprisingevidence

thatpeoplehavelivedherealmostaslong.

Seventhousandyearsago,

membersoftheShaoHaotribecarvedmagicalsymbols

representingsignificantelementsoftheirdailylives.

Thepetroglyphsshowwheatsheavesconnectedbylinestohumanfigures,

thefirstknownrecordingsofcultivationinChina.

Familiarwiththespectacleofyearlybirdmigrations,

theShaoHaopeoplechoseasymbolofabirdastheirtotem.

MountJinpingliesneartheShandongpeninsula,

animportantwinteringsiteformigrantbirds,

andeventodaytherearestillcommunitiesalongthiscoastline

whoretainaspecialaffinitywiththeirlocalbirdlife.

YandunJiaovillage,

onthenorth-easternshoreofthepeninsula,

Themigratingcraneshavesofartravelled

over2,000kilometressouthwardsalongthecoast.

PassingtheMiluDeerReserveatDafeng,

theyareapproachinganothersaltmarsh

whichwillprovidetheperfectconditionsforthemtospendthewinter.

ThisisYancheng,thelargestcoastalwetlandinChina,

visitedbyanestimatedthreemillionbirdseachyear.
