Abstract

WhenitestotheAmericanculture,moreissuesaretalkedaboutAmericangeography,politics,andeconomy,insteadofitspeople.Asamatteroffact,Americanpeopleisalsoasignificantpartofitsnationalculture.ThispapermainlytalksaboutcharactersofAmericanpeopleandmanyformingreasons.Differentnationalitieshavedifferentcharactersduetovariouslyculturalbackgrounds,suchas,Chinesemodesty,Frenchromance,Germanstrictnessandsoon.CertainlyAmericanpeoplehasitsownuniquecharacters:

openness,directness,independence,self-reliance,hardwork,etc.AlthoughAmericanpeopleareamiable,theyresistthefate.However,Allthesecharactersarenothaphazard,theyareformedfromavarietyoffactors,includinghistory,geography,culture,religion,andeatinghabits.

摘要

提到美国文化,人们谈论更多的是美国的地理,政治,经济,而非她的人民。

事实上,美国的人民也是其文化的重要组成部分,本文就将讨论美国人的性格特点及其诸多形成的原因。

不同的民族有着不同的性格特征。

人们常常谈及中国人的含蓄,法国人的浪漫,德国人的严谨等等。

当然,美国人也拥有其鲜明的性格特征。

美国人奔放,随和,坦率和独立进取,自立,自动,抗拒命运。

所有的这些特点不是偶然的,是受其历史,地理,文化,及饮食习惯等各种因素共同形成的结果。

1.Introduction

Everynationhasitsownuniquepersonality.PeopleoftentalkaboutChinesemodesty,Frenchromance,andGermanstrictnessetc.TheAmericancharacterequallyhasitsowndistinctivefeatures.Americansaregenerallycheerful,sociable,andtheyhaveinformaletiquette.Thefirstmeetingisnotnecessarytoshakehands.Sometimes,theyjustsmile,andsay”Hi”or“Hello”,whichtheyconsideredispolite.Americansgenerallyshakehandswithwomengently.Infarewell,theyjustwavetoyouandsay“Goodbye”or“Seeyoutomorrow”.Butifothersbowtothem,theyalsousetheappropriateetiquettetoexpresstheirrespect,suchasshakinghands,nodding,huggingandsoon.WhenyoufirstmakeaAmericanfriend,hemaytalkwithyouallthetime.Whenyouwalkinthestreet,glancingtostrangerswithnointention,hemaysmileornodtoyou,orsay“Hello”.Ifyourcarbreaksdownontheroad,enthusiasticAmericanpeoplewillhelpyoutorepair.Ifyougetlostinthestreet,theywillbeeagertohelpyou.

Americansdonotliketobesubordinatedtootherswhendealingwitheachother.Theyeitherdonotlikethosewhoaretoopolitetoplimentthemselves.Therefore,Americansmakefriendsandhopetogivepeopleagoodimpression,butoftenlackthekindofheart-familiar.Besides,theyareindependentandenterprising.Theydonotliketodependontheirparentsandothers.Onthestreet,everymorningyouwillseeaboydeliveringmorningnewspapersdoortodoorregardlessofthewindandrain.Theywillgettheirreturnbytheireffort.TomostAmericanstudents,theyearntheirtuitionbydoingpark-timejobandstrugglingforscholarships.Theyhavetoleavetheirparentstoliveontheirownwhentheyareinadulthood.

Everythingintheworldhasitsorigin.Thereisnoexception.Certainlyculturealsohasithistory,letalonetheAmericancharacters.Americancharactersarenothaphazard,andtheyhavetheirorigin.Theyareformedfromavarietyoffactors,includinghistory,geography,culture,religion,andeatinghabits.

2.Americancharacters

2.1openness

Americansareopenandoutgoing.Theyareeasiertoapproach.Americanpeopleliketotalkwitheachotherbothacquaintancesandstrangers.However,theydislikekeepingsilence,andtheyarenotgoodathidingtheiropinions.WhenyouseeafewAmericanswhoaretalkingactivelyinthestreet,actuallymaybetheyjustknoweachotheronehourago.PeoplewhohaveevercontactwithAmericanswillhavethesamefeelingthatAmericansinthewesternpeoplearethemostoutgoing,andthemostamiable.CertainlyitisalsotheAmericanloveliness.

2.2informality

Americansarewell-knownfortheirinformalityintheworld.Wecanfindthischaracterfromtheirdressandtheirwayofgreetingwhentheymeet.Americansdressverycasually.Intheireyes,fortisthemostimportantandtheyconsideritunnecessarytodothoseflashyandsuperficialitems.Intheofficebuilding,youwillfindthosewhite-collarworkerswithoutacoatandatieworkintheiroffices.Inaddition,inuniversitycampus,youwillseeAmericanprofessorswhooftenwearjeansandNikeshoesintheirclasses.TheirdressisverynormalinAmericancampus.Lastbutnotleast,inthename,whethersubordinatesseetheirbosses,orstudentsmeettheirteachers,Americansgenerallyjustneedtosmile,orsay“Hi”and“Hello”.Itisnotnecessarytoaddtoanytitles.

2.3Successasagoal

IntheeyesofAmericans,whatisthemostimportantisnotthefamilybackgroundofoneperson,buthisowntalentandability.Evenachild,healsowantstoperformveryprominentlyintheschooltowinhisparentsfavor.Theyalsoseemtounderstandthatloveoftheirparentsisnottheirbirthright,buttheirspoilsthroughtheirefforts.ThatAmericansplaceaveryhighvaluationuponsuccessisagreedonbyalmosteveryAmericans.Successforthemdoesnotnecessarilymeanmaterialrewards,butrecognitionofsomesortwhichispreferablymeasurable.Iftheboyturnsouttobeapreacherinsteadofabusinessman.Thatisallright.Butifthebiggerhischurchandcongregationare,themoresuccessfulhewillbe.

2.4Independenceandself-reliance

Americansdonotlikerelyonothers,equallytheyeitherdislikeothersrelyingonthemselves.Everymorningyouwillseeaeleven-year-oldboywhowilldelivermorningnewspapersdoortodoor,andsomegirlsatthesameagewillgototheneighborstohelplookingafterlittlechildren.Theirparentsconsiderthatindependencefortheirchildrenfromchildhoodwillhavegreatbenefitsontheirfuturesociallife.Besides,Americansareparticularabout“DOITYOUSELF”.InAmerica,theygenerallydotheirowncooking,theirownwashing,theirownmarketingandothertaskswhoevertheymaybeadoctor,professor,lawyer,businessmanandsoon.Theyhaveacertainofsocialstatus,buttheydonotthinkthatdoingchoreswillreducetheirdecentidentity.Theyhaveenougheconomicpowertoemployahousekeeper,buttheydonotthinkthattheyneedtodothis.

2.5Spiritofresistingthefate

Americansdonotbelievethepowerofthefate.Theythinkthosewhobelievethefatearebackward,naiveandbarbaric.Thefatalismistherepresentativeofsuperstition,lazinessandunwillingnessoftakingactiveaction.Americansareveryactive.Thereisanarticlecalled“Americanonthemove”,whichtalksaboutAmericanhistory,actuallyAmericanhistoryofimmigration.InAmerica,40millionfamilieswillmoveeveryyear,andaverageonefamilyinfivefamilieswillmoveonceeverythreeyears.Thisfrequentimmigrationinacertainreflectthattheyarenotusedtoliveordinarydailylife,andtheyareeagertofindanewplace,lookingfornewjobopportunities,andgainanewcharacter.

3.ReasonsforformingAmericancharacters

3.1Historicalfactor

Thedevelopmentandchangeofeverythingaretheproductofacertainhistoricalperiod.TheformingofAmericancharacterhasaprofoundlysocialandhistoricalorigin.Americansdonotexperiencethefeudalsociety.Beforetheinvasion,Americaisaprimitivesociety
