Numerousattemptsaremadebyscholarstosetuptheprecisechronologicaleventsinthestory.[9]OnereasonofmakingsuchhardworkisduetoWilliamFaulkner’sskillfulnarrativetechniques,theunchronologicaltimeinnarration.Fergusononcesaidthat,innoneofFaulknershortstoriesistimehandledinamorecomplexwaythanthatinAroseforEmily,[10]Faulknerdeliberatelydestroyschronologicaltimeinthisstory.However,itisofgreatsignificancetomakeoutthelinerorderinnarrationofthestory.WithacarefulexaminationofChronologicalhintsinthetext,apossibletimetableofsomemajoreventsofEmilycanbemadeasbelow:

Thestorywaspublishedin1931,andinpartfour,“uptothedayofherdeathatseventy-fouritwasstillthatvigorousiron-gray,likethemenofanactivemen”,[10]fromwhich,itisknownthatMissEmilywasbornin1857.ParttwotellstoreadersthatMissEmilyisstillsingleatherthirties.BecauseherfatherdrivesyoungmenwhowanttomarryMissEmilyaway.In1888,MissEmily’sfatherisdead,leavingheraloneintheworld.Andshegetssickforalongtime,untilinthesummerafterherfather’sdeath,HomerBarrenarrivesandMissEmilyfallsinlovewithHomerBarren.1890isatoughyearforMissEmily;
shehastogetridofalltheobstaclesofherlove.Inaway,Homer’sabandonisalsoanobstacleofherloveandmarriage.Therefore,inordertokeephersweethearttostaywithher,shebuysthearsenicandkillsHomer.Thebadsmellofthecorpsemakestheneighborshardlytolerate,andtheysprinklelimetoeliminatethesmell.In1894,ColonelSartorisremittedMissEmily’stax,thereasonisthatMissEmilyistoopoortopaythetax,andshehastoopenchina-paintinglessonstoearnsomemoneyforbasicneedsforherlife.AfterColonelSartorisdiedforalmosttenyears,MissEmilyvanquishesthenewaldermenwhourgehertopaytaxes.AndthisisthelatesteventhappenedbeforeMissEmilydies.AfterMissEmilyisburied,peoplegototheroomwhichnoonehadseenforfortyyears.Whattheyfindisthatamanhimselflayinthebed,wheretheyalsoseealongstrandofiron-grayhair.SoMissEmilyiscommittedtocrimeatthelastwordsinthestory,andattheendofherlife.

however,thisorderisdeliberatelydestroyedbythenarrator.
1.2NarrativeTimeinARoseforEmily

Thefirstpartdescribethattown’speoplecometoMissEmily’sfuneralwithdifferentmotivations:
“themenarethroughasortofrespectfulaffectionforafallenmonument,thewomenaremostlyoutofcuriositytoseetheinsideofherhouse.”[12]Thusarousesreaders’interestinMissEmilyandherlife.However,thenarratordoesnotsatisfythecuriositiesofreaderstowardsMissEmilyimmediately,butthelatesteventhappensjustbeforeMissEmily’sdeath,istheTaxaffair.In1894,ColonelSartorisremitshertaxesandthedispensationfromhisfather’sdeathtoperpetuity.However,thenewgenerationignoresthisandurgesMissEmilytopaytaxes.
ThesecondparttellstheSmellaffairthirtyyearsbeforetheTaxaffair,andthirtytwoyearsbeforeherfather’sdeath,neighborssprinklelimearoundMissEmily’shousetoeliminatethebadsmell.What’smore,inpartthree,afterfather’sdeathandbeforethesmell,readersgettoknowthatMissEmilyfallsinlovewithHomerBarron.Whenpeoplearenotoptimisticontheirloveandmarriage,MissEmilybuysarsenicwhichincreasespeople’sguessupontoMissEmily.
Partfoursupplementsthereasonsforcousin’svisitandMissEmilybooksmen’stoilet.Alsointhispart,thenarratortellsthechangesofMissEmilyafterHomer’sdisappearance.Atherforties,sheteacheschina-paintingforsixorsevenyearsinordertopaythetaxesduringwhichhertaxesareremitted.Attheendofpartfour,MissEmilydiesinoneofthedownstairsroom,whichislackofsunlight.
