Abstract

Englishhasbecomeauniversallanguage,andalsobecomeawayforsometradetransaction,educationalandculturalrelations.Englishisbecomingfrequentlycalledthe“languageofcommunication”.SomanypeoplebegintolearnEnglish,butitisverydifficultandboringformanyChinesetolearnEnglish.Althoughtheymayhavemadegreatefferts,theresultcanbestillfarfromsatisfying.YoucanimproveyourEnglishwithinashortperiodifyouareinterestedinitandhavegoodmethods.Exaleypointedout:

Englishhasbecomeanintenationallanguage.Intheworld,thereare3,370,000peopleuseEnglishastheirNationalLanguage,and2,350,000peopleuseEnglishastheirSecondLanguage.Between100,000,000and1,000,000,000peopleuseEnglishasaforeignlanguage(Crystal,1997)

Todaynomatteryoulikeitornot,Englishistheclosestthingtoalinguafrancaaroundtheglobe;

Englishisverywidelyusedforbusiness.BetweendifferentcountriesmostbusinesslettersaroundtheworldarewritteninEnglish,andthreequartersoftheworld’sbooksandnewspapersaremadeinEnglish.ButtheproblemisthatmanyEnglishlearnersarenotintestedinEnglishstudy.HowtomakeEnglishstudymoreinterestingdrawsmoreandmoreattention.ThispapertriestostatesomepointstohelpEnglishlearners.

Ⅱ.presentstatusofEnglishstudy

Inourcountry,somepeoplelearnEnglishinordertopassexamandgetdiaploma;

somewanttofindabetterjobaftergratuationtolearnEnglish;

somearefondofEnglish.differentpeoplehavediffferentpurposestolearnEnglish,actually,therealpurposeoflearningEnglishistouseitflexiblely.however,itisquitehardforustodothat,becausetheteachingmethodsaresostiff,andthestudymethodsaresoinflexible.SuchaslisteningintoEnglishclassesinhighschools,wherefindthesefollowingproblems.

Firstly,theatmosphereinclassistoomonotonous.Atthebeginningofclass,teaceherandstudentsjustgreetwithgoodmorning/afternoon,sometimes,thereisnogreeting.Teacherdoesnothavesomethinginterestingtoattractstudentsatthebeginningoftheclass.

Secondly,thecontentofteachingistooinsipidanddull.EnglishhasconventionallybeentaughtthroughtheGrammar-TranslationMethod(G-TM)underintenseexaminationpressure.IndeedtheG-TMcanprovidelearnerswithabasicknowledgeofEnglishgrammeraswellaswithsomeskillsinliteraltranslation.Orteacheronlyteachstudentslearnsomenewwords,thenreadthepassage,atlasttranslatethepassage.Thereisnoactivityintheclassteaching,forexample,pairwork,groupworkandrole-play.

Thirdly,thereisnooperationprocess.JustrememberingEnglishwordsanddoingexercisesisnotenough,ifyoudonotusewhatyouhaveleant,youwillforgetitquickly.Soafterclasss,thepracticesareveryimportant.

Inaword,Englishclassissoboring,stiffandunappealingforstudents,theycomplainthattheyarenotinterestedinEnglishclass.TheeducationistUshensgeinRussiasaid:

“thereisnointerestingandforcetostudy,whichwillkillstudents’willingaboutlearningknowleage.”Sointerestis“motivepower”ofstudy,interestisthe“catalyst”ofstudy.Onthecontrary,thereisnointerest,learnEnglishisnotpossible.

Ⅲ.Theimportanceofinterest

WalterVispoelconductedaresearchontheinterestfactor,andtheyreportedthatduringEnglishstudy,interesttakes25%ofthesuccessfulelements;

andittakes35%ofthefailedelements.Wecanseethatinterestisveryimportantforstudents’successorfailure.Interestcanpromotetheinsidepowerofstudy;

anditisstudents’strongmotiveforce;

interestisthebestteacher;

interestenhancestudentsunderstandingandacceptability;

interestmakesstudentsjointheclassactivitypositively.Oncestudentshavestronginterest,theywillstudyEnglishhappily.

“Interestisthebestteacher,”Onlyarestudentsinterestedin,theywillbehappytolearn,taketheinitiativetolearn.Soteachersshouldstrivetocreatearelaxed,happy,harmonious,equalclassroomlearningatmosphere.

Ⅳ.ThemethodsofimpovingtheinterestofEnglish

EducatorsfamousUkrainianNinasaid:

“Nointerest,andwascompelledtocarryoutthestudy,wouldstiflestudentstoacquireknowledge.”Confuciussaid:

“learningeverything,first,whomustbeinterestedinit.”Sointerestingisnecessaryandsignificantforlearners,manypsychologistsandeducatorshavehadsameemotion.

Studentslearntoclearlydeterminelearninggoalsandinspirestudentstolearn.Theworldtodayisintheinformationage,scienceandtechnologyaredevelopingrapidly,theuniversaluseofcomputers,networkconnectivity,thehumansocietyisincreasinglybecominganinterdependentworld,theworldofEnglishisthemostusefulltoolfortheexchangingofideas.ItissaidthatEnglishhasbecomethe21stcentury’skey.AfterlearningtheimportanceofEnglishandthentouseitindalilylife,teachershouldcorrectstudents’attitudetowardsEnglishlearning,thenstimulateinterestandenhancetheirthirstforknowledge.Setlearninggoals,whichgivestudentsaclearoraperiodofthemaintargets,then.Inthiswaynotonlyenchancethestudents’enthusiasmaboutlearningEnglish,butimprovetheirinterest,andmakestudentsplaythemainroleintheclass.
