Theindustrialtownswerenotpleasantplacestolivein.Theworkers'
quarterswereover-crowdedandthepeoplelivedinthemidstoffilthanddisease.
TheIndustrialRevolutionalsobroughtaboutwhatwaslatercalledthefactorysystem.Workingconditionsinfactorieswerebad.Thepeoplehadtoworklonghoursforsmallwages.Accidentswerecommonandtheemployertooknoresponsibilityforthem.Themostunfortunatevictimsofthefactorysystemwerechildren.Childrenonlyfourorfiveyearsoldwereemployedinfactoriesandmines.
Manyinfluentialpeoplebegantoprotestagainsttheterribleconditionsunderwhichthepeoplelivedandworked.Gradually,theEnglishParliamentmadenewlawstoprotectworkers,particularlywomenandchildren.In1842,itwasmadeillegaltoemploywomen,andchildrenundertenyearsold,toworkinthemines.Anotherlawwaspassedin1847allowingonlytenhoursofworkperdayforwomenandforboysundereighteenyearsofage.After1824,workingmenwerealsoallowedtoformunionstobargainpeacefullywiththeiremployersforbetterworkingconditionsandbetterwages.Strikeswere,however,forbiddenformanyyears.
