Whilehedidn’tputalleffortsintohisstudies,hegraduatedfromOxfordUniversityin1962anddidjustwellenoughonhisfinalexamtoearnadmissiontotheUniversityofCambridgetopursueadoctorate.“Physicswasalwaysthemostboringsubjectatschoolbecauseitwassoeasyandobvious.Butphysicsandastronomyofferedthehopeofunderstandingwherewecamefromandwhywearehere.IwantedtoseethroughthedepthsoftheUniverse.”
Thencamewhathelaterreferredtoas“thatterriblething”.He’dnoticedatOxfordthathe’dbecomeincreasinglyclumsyandwouldsometimestripandfallfornoobviousreason.Testsindicatedmotorneurondisease;
hecouldnotexpecttolivemorethanacoupleofyears.Afterheholedupinhisroomfordays,heattendedaNewYear’sEveparty,wherehemetayoungstudentnamedJaneWilde.Theirlovestrengthenedhiswilltolive.Theymarriedin1965.Theywouldhavethreechildrenbeforehisconditionworsenedtonear-completeparalysis.
Hereceivedadoctoratein1966.Afewyearslater,heformedaclosecooperationwithCambridgecolleagueRogerPenrose.Theydevelopedatheorythattheuniversehasnotalwaysexisted:

ThesecondmajorchangeistakingplaceinChina.Withoutslowingdowneconomicgrowth,inthepastfewyearsithasmadeamazingprogressinloweringitsdemandforcoalandoil,advocatingrenewableenergiesandarrestingthegrowthofcarbon-dioxideemissions.Whileitremainstheworld’sbiggestimporteroffossilfuels,itsexperiencewithairpollutionanditsconcernsaboutover-dependenceonimportedoilhavemadeitkeenertoharvestmoreofitsownwindandsunlight.Italsohasbyfartheworld’smostambitiousplansforelectricvehicles.Initsownway,China’senergytransitionhasbeenasremarkableasAmerica’s.
