AlthoughaspirinwasfirstsoldbyaGermancompanyin1899,ithasbeenaroundmuchlongerthanthat.Hippocrates,inancientGreece,understoodthemedicalvalueoftheleavesandtreebarkwhichtodayareknowntocontainsalicylates,thechemicalinaspirin.Duringthe19thcenturytherewasagreatdealofexperimentationinEuropewiththischemical,anditledtotheintroductionofaspirin.By19l5,aspirintablets(片剂)wereavailableintheUnitedStates.
Formillionsofpeoplesufferingfromarthritis,aspirinistheonlythingthatworks.Asmallquantityofaspirin(twofive-graintablets)relievespainandinflammation.Italsoreducesfeverbyinterferingwithsomeofthebody'
