1.1TheNecessityofTranslationofLatestWordswithChineseFeatures

Withtheall-rounddevelopmentofChinesesociety,newthingsandphenomenonemergeendlessly.Anditstypicalmanifestationisthatnumerousdazzling,richandcolorfullatestwordswithChinesefeaturesareregularlycomingoutintheaspectsofpolitics,economy,scienceandtechnology,entertainmentandsociallife.Accordingtosuchkindoflanguagephenomenon,therelatedexpertspointout:

thenewsystem,neworder,newmethod,newconcept,newtool,newthoughtandalltheothernewthingsthatoccurinsociallife,willbeembodiedinlanguagebyusingeveryconceivablemeans,andthosearenotembodiedcannotactthecommunicativefunction.Thelatestidiomshavebeenseenastheepitomeoftheimprovementoftheepochandamirrorthatcanreflectthedevelopmentofthesociety.ThelatestwordswithChinesefeaturesarenative-bornnewwords,andtheirconstantemergenceistheresultgivenbirthbysocialdevelopmentandimprovement.Atthesametime,astheenhancementofpropagandaabroadaswellasforeignmedia’sclosewatchonChinesedevelopmentsituation,thetranslationoflatestChineseidiomshasbecomethenewresearchfocusofboththedomestictranslationworldandforeignmedia.

1.2CurrentResearchSituationofTranslationofLatestWordswithChineseFeatures

Someacademicjournalhaspioneeredaspecialcolumnnamedas“汉英时事政经词语选登”（selectedpublicationofcurrentpoliticalandeconomiceventsofChinaandBritain）Itconsistsofanextraordinarynumberoflatestwordsofcurrentevents,including“EightHonorandEightShame”（八荣八耻）,“WorkRelatedtoAgriculture,RuralAreasandFarmers”（三农工作）,“TheThreePresents”（三个代表）,“HarmoniousSociety”（和谐社会）,andothercorrespondingEnglishtranslationofsuchkindofpoliticalandeconomiclatestwords.ThebookDictionaryResearchhasalsopioneeredaspecialcolumn“新词新义集萃”,whichspeciallycollectsthefashionableandlatesthotidiomsandgivesadditionalinterpretationofthecorrespondingEnglishtranslationaswellassomeillustrationsfortheusageandcontextofsuchwords.ThewebsiteofChinaDailyhasopenedthespecialcolumnwiththenameof“latesttranslationforneologism”,beingspecializinginsupplyingrelevantEnglishtranslationforthelatesthotwords.Havingsummarizedthevariousacademicstudies,ithasputforthanewbooknamedas“LatestChinese-EnglishCharacteristicVocabulary”.NewChinese-Englishdictionaryhasmadegreatachievementintheaspectofediting.Allthedictionariesarerichinentry,includingboththelatestChineseidiomsandnumerousloanwordsthathasalreadyenteredintooursociallifeandbeenwidelyused,suchasModernChineseDictionary,Chinese-EnglishDictionary,XinhuaNeologismDictionary,EnglishTranslationofChineseNeologisms,Chinese-EnglishandEnglish-ChineseNeologismDictionary,andseriesofneologismdictionaries.AmongChinese-Englishneologismdictionariespublishedinrecentyears,《汉英外事工作常用词汇》（FOREIGNAFFAIRS）,Zhu’sworkis《中国时尚热点新词速译》（QuickTranslationofChineseNewWords）,Yan’s《中文特色词分类精选英译5000条》（EnglishTranslationofChineseLatestIdioms），aswellasYang’s《简明汉英时事用语手册》（ChinesetoEnglishExpressionsofCurrentEvents）.

AsregardstothespecificresearchontranslationoflatestwordswithChinesecharacteristics,theonethathasreceivedgreatachievementsisYangQuanhong’s《汉英词语翻译探微》（ApproachestotranslationofChineseWordsandExpressionsintoEnglish）.TheauthorofthisbookhasaccumulatedawealthofsupportingmaterialsrelatedtopaginaltranslationofChineseandEnglishandconductedadiscussionabouttranslationtheory.Theauthorhasalsocollectedawholelotofrelatedinformationandfolloweduptomakerelevantresearches.Thisbookisthecrystallizationoftheauthor’sexperienceandgainedknowledgethroughmanyyears’study.Thewholebookconsistsoffourparts,including“generalexposition”,“individualcases”,“meanderramble”and“illustration”.Itcarriesontheelaborationfromboththemacroscopicandmicroscopicperspective.Moreover,Zhang’s《报刊新词英译纵横》（OnTranslationsofChinesePressNeologismintoEnglish）isabookspecializinginexploringtheissuesofEnglishtranslationofpressneologisms（ZhangJian，2001：

4）.Basedontranslationtheoryandpragmaticism,andfromtheperspectiveofnewsspreadingeffectandcross-culturelinguistics,thisbookcomprehensivelyintroducesthefeatures,standards,skillsandcommonerrorsinconnectionwiththenewwords,oldwordswithnewmeaningaswellasloanwords.Thisbookhasalsospeciallyselected80pressnewwordsastypicalillustrations,andmadespecificanalysisforthetranslationofnewwords,translatingmethods,substitutewords.TheachievementsgainedbydomesticacademicworldandpublishingworldhasplayedavitalroleinboththepromotionofresearchonlatestChinese-EnglishwordsandtheenhancementoftransitinglevelforcurrentChinese-Englishnews.

WiththerapiddevelopmentofChineseeconomy,thegradualenhancementofChina’sinternationalinfluence,andtheconstantexpandingofforeignexchange,foreignmedia’sreportsaboutChinesepolitics,economy,cultureandotheraspectscanbeseenveryofteninforeignnewspapersandmagazines.Themostinfluencedtwomagazines-TimesandNewsweek,arequiteconcernedaboutthedevelopmentofChina,andtherearealmostreportsaboutChinaeveryweekinitsAsianeditionofrecentyears.TherearealwaysSpecialChineseeditionspublishedinthem.Asaresult,someforeignlearnershavepaidattentiontohowforeignmediadealswithlatestChineseidioms.AlotofrepresentativeworksinsuchaspectoccurinChina,including（2003）ZhuTianwen’s《美国新闻期刊中汉英翻译采用的策略和方法》（TheStrategyandMethodsUsedinC-ETranslationinAmericanNewsMagazines），Wang’s《论时代周刊中国报道文章对汉语文化词语的解释》（OntheTranslationoftheChineseHighlyCulture-LoadedWordsandPhrasesinTime'

sChinaReport）,andsoon（WangXiangbing，2003：

2）.Atthesametime,anotherlearnerpointsout:

payattentiontotherelevantEnglishmediaonweekdays,andyoucanoftenfindsomeready-maderepresentationsthatcouldreflectthenewsituationandnewthingsofChina.Soobjectivelyspeaking,thetranslationofsomeEnglishmediacanalwaysbeconsideredasdirectreference.However,itshouldalsoavoidblindaccepting,especiallyasregardstotranslationofpoliticalterms,whichhasinvolvedinthepoliticalorientationofbothourowncountryandwesterncountries.

AlthoughChinesetranslationcirclehasaccomplishedagreatdealintheresearchregionoftranslationforChinese-Englishneologism,therearestillalotofdrawbacksinboththeoreticalresearchandtranslationpractice.Ontheonehand,theChineseneologismshavereflectedtheparticularthingsandphenomenonofChina,andimplyChineseethniccharacteristics.Thetranslationofsuchwordsownsthefeaturesofcreativity,pragmaticalityandetc.Asaconsequence,thecorrespondingEnglishtranslationwithoutexampleneedstheinitiativeoftranslators.Becauseofthedemandofoutsidepromotion,thetimelinessofneologismsappearsespeciallyimportant.MostofthetargetaudienceofthetranslationtextisforeignreaderwhosemothertongueisnotChinese,andthenthefeedbackofinformationiscomparativelylaggingbehind.Itisquitedifficulttocorrectthetranslationorembellishaccordingtotheacceptabledegreeofreaders,thereforetheoccurrenceofwrongtranslationis
