C),andsealevelhasrisenseveralinches.Someprojected,longer-termresultsofglobalwarmingincludemeltingofpolarice,witharesultingriseinsealevelandcoastalflooding;

extinctionofspeciesasecologicalnichesdisappear;
morefrequenttropicalstorms;

Amongfactorsthatmaybecontributingtoglobalwarmingaretheburningofcoalandpetroleumproducts(sourcesofcarbondioxide,methane,nitrousoxide,ozone);
deforestation,whichincreasestheamountofcarbondioxideintheatmosphere;
methanegasreleasedinanimalwaste;
andincreasedcattleproduction,whichcontributestodeforestation,methaneproduction,anduseoffossilfuels.
Muchofthedebatesurroundingglobalwarminghascenteredontheaccuracyofscientificpredictionsconcerningfuturewarming.Topredictglobalclimatictrends,climatologistsaccumulatelargehistoricaldatabasesandusethemtocreatexxputerizedmodelsthatsimulatetheearth'
sclimate.Thevalidityofthesemodelshasbeenasubjectofcontroversy.Skepticssaythattheclimateistooxxplicatedtobeaccuratelymodeled,andthattherearetoomanyunknowns.Somealsoquestionwhethertheobservedclimatechangesmightsimplyrepresentnormalfluctuationsinglobaltemperature.Nonetheless,forsometimetherehasbeengeneralagreementthatatleastpartoftheobserved
warmingistheresultofhumanactivity,andthattheproblemneedstobeaddressed.In1992,attheUnitedNationsConferenceonEnvironmentandDevelopment,over150nationssignedabindingdeclarationontheneedtoreduceglobalwarming.
In1994,however,aUNscientificadvisorypanel,theIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange,concludedthatreductionsbeyondthoseenvisionedbythetreatywouldbeneededtoavoidglobalwarming.Thefollowingyear,theadvisorypanelforecastariseinglobaltemperatureoffromto°

C)by2100ifnoactionistakentocutdownontheproductionofgreenhousegases,andariseoffrom1to°

C)evenifactionistaken(becauseofalreadyreleasedgasesthatwillpersistintheatmosphere).
AUNConferenceonClimateChange,heldinKyoto,Japan,in1997resultedinaninternationalagreementtofightglobalwarming,whichcalledfor
reductionsinemissionsofgreenhousegasesbyindustrializednations.Notallindustrialcountries,however,immediatelysignedorratifiedtheaccord.In20XXtheG.W.BushadministrationannounceditwouldabandontheKyotoProtocol;
becausetheUnitedStatesproducesaboutonequarteroftheworld'
sgreenhousegases,thiswasregardedasasevereblowtotheefforttoslowglobalwarming.DespitetheAmericanmove,mostothernationsagreedlaterintheyear(inBonn,Germany,andinMarrakech,Morocco)onthedetailsnecessarytoconverttheagreementintoabindinginternationaltreaty,whichcameintoforcein20XXaft
