TheGermanseventuallybeganbombingBritishcitiesinSeptember.SomechildrenwereevacuatedbyshiptoBritishDominions,includingAustralia,Canada,NewZealand,andSouthAfrica.TheCORBselectionswerenotdoneonafirst-e,first-servedbasis.CORBclassifiedandprioritizedthechildren.Chargessoonappearedinthepressthatthewell-to-dowerebeinggivenpriority.CORBarrangedforthetransportation.TheGovernmentpaidthepassages.Quiteanumberofchildrenhadalreadybeenevacuated.Thistendedtobechildrenfromrichfamilieswithmoneyandoverseascontacts.TheBritishpubliceventuallydemandedthegovernmentpaysothatlessprivilegedchildrenwerealsoeligible.
WorldWarIIoccurredbeforethebeginningoftrans-Atlanticairtravel.LinerswereusedtotransportthechildrenandthisprovedtobedangerousbecausetheU-boatsquicklyemergedasthegreatestthreat.AndthisputtheevacueechildrentryingtocrosstheAtlantictosafetyindanger.Twoshipscarryingchildevacueesweretorpedoed(破坏)in1940.OnewastheDutchlinerVolendamwith320childrenonAugust30.Thecrewmanagedtogetthelifeboatsoffandsavedthechildren.TheywerereturnedtoGlasgow.TheotherwastheCityofBenares,anoceanlinerwith200Britishandforeigncivilianpassengersand93Britishchildrenwithaguardofnurses,teachers,andaclergyman.ItwastorpedoedonSeptember13.ThecrewattemptedtolaunchthelifeboatsasBenaresbegantosink.Theroughweathermadethisdifficult,somanyofthepassengersinthelifeboatsdiedintheextremeconditions.Only15childrensurvived.Churchill,whenhelearnedofthedisaster,decidedtoendtheoverseasevacuationscheme.
