4Itispossiblethatthecomediansexaggerated,andthatVictorianwiveswerenotallviragoswithpokers,whobeattheirtipsyhusbandsforstayingouttoolate.ButatleasttheyandtheiraudiencesrefrainedfrompaintingmarriageasaninevitableParadise.EventheclergywouldgonofartherthantosaythatmarriagesweremadeinHeaven.Thattheydidnotbelievethatmarriagenecessarilyendedthereisshownbythefactthatoneofthemwrotea“best-seller”bearingthetitleHowtoBeHappyThoughMarried.
5Idoubt,indeed,whethercommonopinioninanyagehaseverlookedonmarriageasanuntroubledParadise.Iconsultedadictionaryofquotationsonthesubjectanddiscoveredthatfewoftheopinionsquotedwererose-coloured.Theseopinions,itmaybeobjected,aretheopinionsofunconventionalpeople,butitisalsotruethattheyareopinionstreasuredandkeptalivebyconventionalpeople.WehavethereputedsayingofthehenpeckedSocrates,forexample,whenaskedwhetheritwasbettertomarryornot:
“Whicheveryoudo,youwillrepent.”WehaveMontaignewriting:
