Inonestudy,researcherscomparedhealth,behavior,sleepcomplaintsandschoolperformanceofnormalandpoorsleepers.“Twenty-onepercentofpoorsleepersfailedoneormoreyearsatschool,whilesimilarproblemswereobservedinjust11%ofnormalsleepers.Moreover,schoolachievementdifficultiesresultedmorefrequentlyinpoorthaninnormalsleepers.Oneofthebestpredictorsforthislowschoolachievementhasbeenidentifiedinchildren’sfatigue,”saidProfessorCurcioa.

Astudyof3,000highschoolstudentsin1998showedthatstudentswithhighergradesreportedmoretotalsleep,earlierbedtimeonschoolnightsandlessirregularsleeppatternsatweekendsthanstudentswithlowergrades.

Anotherstudyinvestigatedtheeffectsoftotalsleepdeprivationonstudentsinalaboratory.After18hoursmovementandresponsetimesslowed;

at34hoursendurancedropped;

at42hoursagility,balanceandpowerweresignificantlyweakened;

at50hoursspeedwasaffected.
