About60percentofparentsquestionedinthesurveysaidtheyarehelpingtheiradultchildrenwhoarenolongerinschoolfinancially,providinghousingandlivingexpenses.

Foranincreasingnumberofadultchildren,thesituationisbad.Twothirdsofadultchildren,aged18to39,whoarenotinschoolsaidtheyfacedtougherfinancialpressuresthanpreviousgenerations,accordingtothesurvey.Andnearlyonethirdofparentsagreedthatitwaseasierforthemtoearnmoneythanfortheirchildren.

Parentsarehelpingtheirchildrenoutofgenuineconcern,andbecausetheydonotwanttoseethemstruggle.ButBecksaidthatparentswhomakesacrificestohelptheiradultchildrenshouldbecautiousabouttheirownfinances.

“Ifyouaretakingonextradebtordelayingretirementtohelpyouradultchild,youcouldbemakingamistakeandputtingyourownfinancialfutureindanger，”Beckwarned.

Boomerangchildrencanalsocauseotherproblemsfortheirparents.Thirtypercentofparentssaidtheyhadgivenupprivacysincetheiradultchildrenmovedbackhome,whilemorethanaquarterhavetakenonaddeddebt,andtenpercenthavedelayedretirement.Butthesurveyalsoshowedthat42percentofadultchildrenlivingathomearehelpingwiththecookingandcleaning.
