AsktheStudentstoreadthepassageasquicklyastheycanandthenanswerthequestionsonthescreen.Letthemgetthemainideaofeachparagraphandbeclearaboutthetextstructure.
Textstructure:
(structuredwriting)Thepassagecanbedividedinto3parts.
PartI(Paras.1-2)Theauthorsetsthesceneofthestorybyprovidinginformationaboutthefour“wh-”words:
who,where,what,andwhy.“Who”referstothenarrator,hisroommateRob,andthebeautifulgirlPolly.“Where”referstoacollegecampus.“What”and“why”refertowhattodoandwhytodoit:
ThenarratordecidestomakePolly“well-spoken”becauseasapromisinglybrilliantlawyer,hewantstohaveagirlfriendwhoisnotonlybeautifulbutalsointelligent.
PartII(Paras.4-25)ThenarratortriestohelpPollybecomesmarterbygivingherlessonsinlogic.AltogetherhespendsfivenightsteachingPollyfourlogicalfallacies,namely,DictoSimpliciter,HastyGeneralization,AdMisericordiam,FalseAnalogy.
