TheJournaloftheAmericanCeramicSociety,publishedmonthly,containsreportsoforiginalresearchontheentirerangeofceramicmaterials.
TheJournaloftheAmericanCeramicSocietycontainsrecordsoforiginalresearchthatprovideorleadtofundamentalprinciplesinthescienceofceramicsandceramic-basedcomposites.Thesepapersincludereportsofthediscoveryofnewphases,phaserelationships,processingapproachesandmicrostructuresthatrelatetoceramicmaterialsandprocesses.Thepapersestablishthelinksbetweenprocessing,structurecharacterizationandpropertiesofceramics,includingmodelingapproachesthatarefoundedonbasicmechanisms.Allthepublishedpapersmustbeofenduringvalueandrelevanttothefieldofceramics.ShortpapersforspeedypublicationarepublishedasRapidCommunicationsandshouldbenovelenoughtojustifyswiftpublication.Full-lengthpapersarepublishedasArticlesandmustaddsignificantlynewandfundamentaladvancestothefield.In-deptharticlesarepublishedasinvitedFeatureArticlesandpapersthatappraiseandassessaparticularsubjectortopicarepublishedasinvitedReviewArticles.

Articlescontainoriginalbasicandappliedresearch.Thesepapersmustbeofenduringvalue,addsignificantlynewandfundamentaladvancestothescientificfieldandberelevanttothefieldofceramics.TwoqualifiedindividualsrevieweacharticleandanAssociateEditormakesarecommendationtooneoftheeditors.
RapidCommunicationsarebriefscientificortechnicalreportsaboutsignificantnewideas,methods,observationsortheoriesrelevanttoceramicscienceandengineering.ThesubjectmatterofaRapidCommunicationmustbeofsufficientnoveltyandimpacttojustifyrapidpublication.Onequalifiedindividual,termedtheContributingEditor,reviewseachRapidCommunication;
sothatthemanuscriptcanbepublishedmorerapidly.
FeatureArticlesaresimilartoarticlesbutusuallyaremoredetailedexpositionsofthesubjectstheycover.FeatureArticlesmayinclude,inpart,reviewsofrecentresearchonthesubjecttoenablethewidestpossibleaudiencetounderstandthetechnicalcontent.TheFeatureArticleisalwaystheleadpaperintheJournal.FeatureArticlesaresubmittedbyinvitationonlybutauthorsmaysendaproposaltotheSeniorEditorforconsideration.TwoqualifiedindividualsrevieweachFeatureArticleandanAssociateEditormakesarecommendationtooneoftheeditors.
ReviewArticlesarecomprehensivemanuscriptsthatappraiseandassessaparticularscientificorengineeringtopicthatisofimportancetoceramicscience.ReviewArticlesshouldintegratetheimportantdevelopmentsinthetopicandcriticallyassessthecurrentstatus.ReviewArticlesaresubmittedbyinvitationonlybutauthorsmaysendaproposaltotheSeniorEditorforconsideration.TwoqualifiedindividualsrevieweachReviewArticleandanAssociateEditormakesarecommendationtooneoftheeditors.
TheJournalalsopublishesCommentsandReplies.AnyreadermaysubmitforpublicationacommentonanypaperthathasbeenpublishedintheJournal,andtheauthorofthepaperwillbeinvitedtoreply.
LengthofManuscripts
TheJournalsupportsseveraltypesofsubmission,eachwithlimitsonthenumberofpublishedpages.Forthemostcommonsubmissioncategories,RapidCommunicationsandArticles,authorsareaidedinestimatingthenumberofpublishedpagesusingwordcountlimits.Thewordcountforpapersshouldincludetheactualwordcountforthetextofthebody,references,andallcaptionsaswellasequivalentwordcountsfortablesandfiguresasdescribedbelow.Forestimatingpurposes,authorsmustaddtotheactualwordcountanequivalentofabout100wordsforeachaverage-sized(8.5cmwideby8.0cmdeep)micrograph,linedrawing,ortable.Formulti–partfigures,eachpartshouldbecountedas100words.
RapidCommunicationswillbenolongerthanthreeprintedpages(~3000words,includingequivalentwordcountsforfiguresandtables).Iftheyappeartobelongerthanthreepages,theirauthorswillbenotifiedandaskedtodecreasethelengthsofthepapersortoresubmitthemasarticles.
Articleswillbenolongerthaneightpages(~8000words,includingequivalentwordcountsforfiguresandtables).Ifmanuscriptsappeartobelongerthaneightpages,theirauthorswillbenotified.Authorswillhavetheoptiontodecreasethelengthsoftheirpapersortorequestexceptionstothepagelimits.ReviewingoflongermanuscriptsisatthediscretionoftheselectedEditor–in–Chiefandshouldberequestedbythecorrespondingauthor.
TheJournalEditorswilldeterminelengthsoffeatureandreviewarticles.Commentsandrepliesarelimitedtotwoprintedpages.
PublicationEthics
Theauthors,reviewers,andeditorsoftheJournaloftheAmericanCeramicSocietyareexpectedtofollowthestandardsdefinedbytheCommitteeonPublicationEthics.Inparticular,authorsshouldnotsubmitmanuscriptsthatcontainpreviouslypublishedresults,plagiarizedmaterial,fictitiousresults,orintentionalreferenceomissions.Manuscriptscurrentlybeingconsideredforpublicationelsewherewillnotbeconsidered.Publicationofabstractsandpresentationsatscientificmeetingswillnotjeopardizefullpublication.
Authorsshoulddiscloserelatedmanuscriptsthatareunderconsiderationorinpresselsewhere,describingtheirrelationshiptothesubmittedmanuscriptandprovidingcopiespreferablyatsubmission,andinanycaseuponrequest.
Authorsshouldnotsubmitmanuscriptsreportingessentiallythesameresearchtomultiplejournals.Inaddition,authorsshouldnotintentionallyfragmentresearchintomultiplemanuscriptsifasinglereportwouldbemoreappropriate.

AnyallegedviolationofanyoftherulesofscientificpublishingethicsasdefinedbytheCommitteeonPublicationEthics(http:
//publicationethics.org/files/International%20standards_authors_for%20website_11_Nov_2011.pdf)willbeinvestigatedconfidentiallyinaccordwithstandardWiley–Blackwellproceduresasoutlinedinourbestpracticesguide(Iftheviolationsarefoundtobesufficientlyserious,theEditorswillrequestthattheauthorsprovideawrittenexplanation.Iftheauthorsdonotprovideanexplanationortheexplanationisunsatisfactory,suchthatthejournal'
sEditorialTeamfindsthattheevidenceclearlyshowsthataviolationofourpublishingethicspolicyhasoccurred,themanuscriptwillberejectedorretracted,dependingoncurrentstatus.InsuchcasestheEditorsreservetherighttobothnotifytheauthors'
institutionoftheviolationofthejournal'
sscientificethicspolicyandimposepunitiveactions,e.g.,abanonpublishinginthejournal.Theabovecourseofactionwillalsotakeeffectifitisestablishedthatauthorshaveviolatedanyofthebasicrulesofethicalscientificconduct.
