ThenovelTheMayorofCasterbridge,writtenbyThomasHardy,relatestheriseandfallofHenchard,whobecameanhonorablemayorfromahumblehay-trusser.ButafterFarfrae,apassionateandintelligentyoungmanwithplentyoffreshideas,cameintohislife,hiscareerbegantodeclinegradually.Intheend,helostthepositionofthemayor,anddiedinmisery.Onthecontrary,allthegloriesandachievementsswarmedtoFarfrae.ThestorytookplacewhenEnglandwasgreatlyinfluencedbytheIndustrialRevolution,whichmarkedanewerainEnglishhistory.Almosteveryaspectofthedailylifewasaffected.ThebookisoneofHardy’sWessexnovels,whicharealsoregardedasnovelsofcharacterandenvironment.Wessexnovelsareknownforthevividdescriptionoftheunexpectedchangeoflifeofthepeoplewholiveinanagriculturalsettingthreatenedbythestormoftheinvadingcapitalism.Inthisthesis,thetensionbetweentraditionandinnovationisclearlyreflectedthroughtheconflictbetweenthetwomayors,DonaldFarfraeandMichaelHenchard.Theyhadsuchadifferentdestiny.

LaterhetakesHenchard’splaceandbecomesthemayor.SoitiswrongtoassertthatHenchardistheprotagonist.Infactthe“mayor”isthecombinationofHenchardandFarfrae.ThatcanbededucedfromHardy’sattitudetowardsthesociety.Inotherwords,HenchardandFarfraerightrepresenttwosidesofHardy’smind.

ManyscholarsgivetheiranalysisintermsofHenchard’sfailure.“CharacterisFate,saidNovis,andFarfrae’scharacterwasjustthereverseofHenchard’s,whomightnotinaptlybedescribedasFausthasbeendescribed—asavehementgloomybeingwhohadquittedthewaysofvulgarmenwithoutlighttoguidehimonabetterway.Throughoutthenovel,hischangeabletempermadehimintofiercecompetitionswithFarfrae,whostrippedhimofhisprideandpoverty.Andhisinsecuritiesledhimtodeceivethepeoplewhoreallylovedhim.Still,peoplethinkheisaworthyman,a“ManofCharacter”.Thereasonliesinhisdeterminationtosufferandinhisabilitytoenduregreatpain.Inaworldthatseemsguidedbythe“schemeofsomesinisterintelligencebentonpunishing’humanbeings,therecanbenomorehonorableandmorerighteouscharacteristicthanHenchard’sbrandof‘defiantendurance.Inmanyaspects,Farfraeisoppositetohim.Farfraehasgoodhumor,efficientbusiness,polishbehaviors,allofwhichmakehimextremelypopularamongthetown’scitizens.However,itisthesesqualitiesthateventuallymakehimHenchard’srival.Allthetime,Farfraeremainspatient,fair-minded,andgenerousinthematterswiththeruinedHenchard.

AnothersayingaboutHenchard’sfailureliesinHardy’spessimismtowardslife.Asanoutstandingrealisticcritic,HardyrevealsthesinhiddeninthefalseprosperityandthesufferingofpeopleintheVictorianAgethroughhisparticularangleandsharpeyes.HeuncoveredthehardlifeundertheCapitalism.Sincehehadseenthedarksideofthesocietyandthedesperationtowardsreality,hesensedthecorruptionofCapitalist,realizedthehardshipandhelplessnessofpeople,andrevealedthemdeeply.Forhim,fateisgovernedbyakindofmysteriousforce.Peoplecannevercontrolhisowndestiny,excepttomarchbythetrackdevisedalready.Thisthoughtisreflectedinhisworks.Thereforehisworksarefilledwithpessimism.Hardyhasanobservingeye,arememberingmind;
