Introduction
JournalisticEnglishissignificantwhenthepromotionofcommunicationisconcerned.Withthegradualdeepeningoftheopeningpolicy,China’sentryintotheWTO,andtheemergenceoftheglobalvillage,theChinesepeoplearemoreeagertoknowtheworldthantheywereeverbefore.ReadingEnglishnewspapersorChinesetranslationofnewsstoriesfromEnglishmedia,whichhasbecomeadailymustformanypeople,iswidelyregardedasawaytowidenone’sscopeofknowledge.Soasabridgeformoreinformation,theroleofnewstranslationgoeswellwithoutsaying.
Asthestartofnewsstories,Newsheadlinesholdakeyposition.Nowadaysthepaceoflivingbecomesmorerapidly,manypeopledonothaveenoughtimetoreadthewholereports,andinstead,theyusuallyscanthenewsheadlinestoselecttheusefulinformation.Becausethelanguageofnewspaperheadlinesthatisintensivelycompactandcleverlydesignedtoservethemajorpurposesoftellingthenews,drawingattentionandestablishingcharacter.Consideringthisfact,theauthorplacesspecialemphasisonthegrammaticalcharacteristicsofnewsheadlinesandthetranslationtactics.
Generallyspeakingagoodheadlineischaracterizedbyconciseness,originalityandattractiveness.ItisprobablyforthisreasonthatbeginnerstojournalisticEnglishhavenoideaofwhatthereportsaysatthefirstsightofitsheadlineandfeelitdifficulttocomprehendandtranslatetheheadline.ButiftheygetintoafullknowledgeofthefeaturesofEnglishnewsheadline,itwon’tbeabigproblemforunderstandingandtranslatingEnglishnewsheadline.

1.1Thedefinitionofheadline
Whenreadinganewspaper,oneshouldfirstreadaheadline.Thenwhatisaheadline?
Sointhefollowingtherearesomedifferentversionsofdefinitionofaheadlinecollected.Thenaworkingdefinitionofheadlineinthispaperisgivenaftertheanalysisofalltheprovisions.
Theconceptof“anewsheadline”hasbeendefinedbynumerousjournalistsandscholars.Forinstance,BruceH.Westley,inhisNewsEditing(SecondEdition),wrote,aheadlineis“anylineorcollectionoflinesofdisplaytypethatprecedesastorytointroduceorsummarizeit.”(Westley,1972:
141)AndauthoritativeEnglishdictionarydefinesaheadlineasfollows:
Theheadingprintedinlargelettersaboveastoryinanewspaper.
AnotherenduringdefinitionofnewsheadlineisofferedbyLongmanDictionaryoftheEnglishLanguage,whichgoes“aheadofanewspaperstoryorarticle,usuallyprintedinlargetypeanddevisedtosummarizethestoryorarticlethatfollows”.
ThepresentwriteralsoagreeswiththedefinitionofferedbyWebster’sThirdNewInternationalDictionary:

1.2Thefunctionsofnewsheadline
Thenewsheadlineisthefundamentalpartofanypieceofnews.Inatimewhenit’shardertogetpeople’sattention,goodwritersalwaysspendtoomuchtimeandcreativeenergyworkingontheirheadlinesbecausetheyknowthattheheadlineisoneofthemostimportantpartsoftheirwork.AccordingtoBruceH.Westley,aheadline,ifeffectivelymade,mustmeetthreerequirements—tocapturetheessenceoftheevent,toattractreaders’attentionandtobeautifythepageonwhichitappears.
1.2.1Advertisingorsellingthenews
Thatistosay,itshouldinterestthecausalreadertosuchanextentthathewillreadthestory.Aheadlinewhichdoesnotarouseinterestatfirstglancefailsofitspurpose.Thedeterminingfactorastowhetheracertainstorywillbereadorpassedbyisusuallytheheadline.Thereader’seyesweepsrapidlyoverapage,stoppingmomentarilyateachheadline.Almostinstantaneouslythereaderdecides,fromthisbriefestofglances,whetherornothewillreadastory.Thereforeagoodcopyreadergivesconsiderablethoughttotheheadlinewhichhepreparesforanystory,longorshort,trivialorsignificant,dullorinteresting.Goodheadsareexcellentadvertisementsforthestories.Theyarestriking;

1.2.2Summarizingthenewscontent
Naturallyreadersbuynewspapersinordertokeeppostedondailyhappenings,buttoservekindsofpurposes;
today’sEnglishnewspapersaregettingfatterwithagreatnumberofpages.Forexample,adailynewspaperhasrangedfromabout20pagestoabout80or90pages.AndnewspapersonSundayssometimesincludemorethan200pages.Literallynoonecanreadallthestoriesprocessedeveryday.Therefore,manyreadershaveformedthehabitofscanningheadlines,whichmakespossiblerapidnewscomprehension.Thusoneofthemostimportantpurposesofheadlinesistoinformreadersquickly,whichmeansthatawell-designedheadlineimmediatelytellsthemthegistoftheaccompanyingstory.
