tknowifthesmallerdiameterdiskswouldworkaswell.

OneproblemIranintoisthatsomenewerharddrivesuseceramicdisksinsteadofmetal.They'

restillcoatedwithmetal,butthey'

rethinnerandacoupleplattersshatteredwhenItriedtomachinethem:

Myoriginalplanforthecenterholepatternhadsmallholes（forthreadedrodsandwashersforspacers）,aswellaslargeholes（forairvents）.

ThesecondsetofplattershadradialarcscutinthemsuchthattheinsideedgeoftheradialcutoutisclosetotheoutsidediameterofthespacersthatIremovedfromtheharddriveassemblies.

Theharddriveplatterswerestackedandclampedtoarotarytablebetweentwosheetsofscrapaluminiumbutthetopdisk（abovepicture）stilltooksomeextradamage.Therestoftheplatterslookmuchbetterthough（seethecompleterotorassemblybelow）.

Spacers

Idecidedtobelazyandusethespacersthatwerebetweentheplattersintheoriginalharddriveassembliesratherthanmachinemyown.Thisincreaseddistance（roughly.05"

）mayleadtoturblentflowratherthanlaminarflowbutwillbecloseenoughforthisproject.

Shaft

Withtheturbineplattersandspacerscomplete,Iturnedashaftfromroundstock.Theinsidediameterofboththeplattersandspacersis.98"

Thebearingsandbrassfittingsweretheonlynewpartsinthisproject（everythingelsewasreusedfromscrapmaterials）.ThesemetricbearingswerepulledfromaboxofoldandusedbearingsandIhadtomachinetheshaftandsidepanelstofitthem.

RotorAssembly

Thereareelevenplattersandtenspacersheldtogetherbythetwocollars.TheharddriveplattersarehardtokeepcleansoIworegloveswhenassemblingtherotor.Thereshouldbeafairamountofpressurebetweenthetwocollarsorthediskswillrotateabouttheshaftinsteadofwithit.

Chamber

Themainchamberisanacrylicblockmachineddownto4.75"
