TheAralSeaislocatedinthecentralAsiandesertbetweenUzbekistanandKazakhstan.In1960,itcovered68,000km2,anditswatersfedagricultureacrosstheregion.By1998,theareaoftheAralSeahadshrunktoonethirdofitsprevioussizeandhasnowbecomeasymbolofhowdrasticallyhumanactivitiescanadverselyaffecttheenvironment,andhowmuchthiseffectcan,inturn,affecthumanactivities.

Thereasonforthischangeisnotexclusivelyduetoman.Droughtsinthe1970sand80sreducedtheamountofwatercarriedbytheAmuDaryaandtheSyrDarya,tworiverswhichfeedthesea.However,farmingpoliciesimplementedduringthemiddleofthe20thcenturyincreasedthefarmingofwater-hungrycropslikecotton,andfarmersusedvastquantitiesofwaterfromthesetworiverstoirrigatetheirland.TheresultofthiswasthatverylittlewaterwasenteringtheAralSea,anditconsequentlybegandecreasinginvolume.

Policymakersatthetimewereawareoftheeffectofdivertingsomuchwaterforagriculture,buttheysawitasanacceptabletrade-offtoimprovingagriculturaloutput,andtherebyimprovingtheeconomy.Theseaitselfwasoflessimportancetotheprogressofsocietythanfarmingwhichcouldproducenotonlycropsfordomesticusebutcommoditiesfortrade.

Theydidnot,however,anticipatealltheeffectsthatthedryingoftheAralSeawouldhave.TheAralSeaisasalt-watersea,andthesaltleftbehindwhenthewatersretreatedhasnowblownawaywithwindandstorms,makingpatchesoflandunsuitableforfarming.Thisaffectsnotonlythesurroundingregion,butlandsasfarasathousandkilometersaway.Inaddition,theremainingwatershavebecomeincreasinglymoreconcentratedinsalt,andthisiskillingoffaoncethrivingfishingindustryasitkillsoffthefishthemselves.TheAralSea,likealllargebodiesofwater,hasastrongeffectonlocalclimate,andasithasdisappeared,harvestingseasonshavebecomeshorteranddryer.Manyfarmersinthesurroundingareahavehadtogiveupgrowingcottonbecausethegrowingseasonisnotlongenoughforthiscrop.

Theeffectoninhabitantsoftheareaisnotlimitedtoeconomicsandproductivity.Thehealthofthoselivingintheareahasdeterioratedduetoasupplyofdrinkingwaterwhichhashighconcentrationsofminerals.Theareahasseensharpjumpsintheratesofcancerandrespiratoryillnesses.

TherearecompellingreasonstohaltandtrytoreversethefateoftheAralSea,butitwouldbedifficult.Theregion,thoughweakenedbyworseningconditions,stilldependsonagriculturetosurvive,andtherearenoalternativesourcesofwater.Inthe1980s,itwasproposedtodivertwaterfromriversfartothenorthinanefforttosavetheAralSea,anditmighthaveworkedhadthepriceoftheproject,anestimated$250billion,notbeenprohibitive.
