　　TodayIwouldliketobeginwithastory.TherewasonceaphysicaltherapistwhotraveledallthewayfromAmericatoAfricatodoacensusaboutmountaingorillas.Thesegorillasareamainattractiontotouristsfromallovertheworld;

thisputthemseverelyunderthreatofpoachingandbeingputintothezoo.Shewentthereoutofcuriosity,butwhatshesawstrengthenedherdeterminationtodevoteherwholelifetofightingforthosebeautifulcreatures.Shewitnessedascene,ascenetakingustoaplaceweneverimagedwe'

veeverbeen,whereintheverydepthoftheAfricanrainforest,surroundedbytrees,flowersandbutterflies,themothergorillascuddledtheirbabies.

　　Yes,that'

samemorablesceneinoneofmyfavoritemovies,calledGorillasintheMist,basedonatruestoryofMrs.DianaFossey,whospentmostofherlifetimeinRwandatoprotecttheecoenvironmentthereuntiltheveryendofherlife.

　　Tome,themovienotonlypresentsanunforgettablescenebutalsoactsasatimelessreminderthatweshouldnotdevelopthetouristindustryatthecostofoureco-environment.

　　Today,weliveinaworldofprosperitybutstillthreatenedbysomanynewproblems.Ontheonehand,tourism,asoneofthemostpromisingindustriesinthe21stcentury,providespeoplewiththegreatopportunitytoseeeverythingthereistoseeandtogoanyplacethereistogo.Ithasbecomealifestyleforsomepeople,andhasturnedouttobethedrivingforceinGDPgrowth.Ithasthemagictoturnabackwardtownintoawonderlandofprosperity.Butontheotherhand,manyproblemscanoccur-naturalscenesaren'

tnaturalanymore.DeforestationtoheatlodgesaredevastatingNepal.OilspillsfromtouristboatsarepollutingAntarctica.TribalpeopleareforsakingtheirnativemusicanddresstolistentoU2onWalkmanandwearNikeandReeboks.

　　Alltheseappallingfactshavebroughtustotherealizationthatwecannolongerstandbyanddonothing,becausetheverythoughtofithasbeenerodingourresources.Encouragingly,theexplosivegrowthofglobaltravelhasputtourismagaininthespotlight,whichiswhytheUnitedNationshasmade2002theyearofecotourism,forthefirsttimetobringtotheworld'

sattentionthebenefitsoftourism,butalsoitscapacitytodestroyourecoenvironment.

　　Noweveryyear,manylocalecoenvironmentalprotectionorganizationsarereceivingdonations-bignotes,smallnotesorevencoins-fromhousewives,plumbers,ambulancedrivers,salesmen,teachers,childrenandinvalids.Someofthemcannotaffordtosendthemoneybuttheydo.Thesearetheoneswhodrivethecabs,whonurseinhospitals,whoaresufferingfromecologicaldamageintheirneighborhood.Why?

Becausetheycare.BecausetheystillwanttheirMotherNatureback.Becausetheyknowitstillbelongstothem.

　　ThiskindoffeelingthatIhave,ladiesandgentlemen,iswhenitfeelslikeit,smellslikeit,andlookslikeit,it'

sallcomingfromascenetoberemembered,ascenetorecallandtocherish.

　　Theothernight,asIsawthemoonlingeroverthelandandbeforeitwassentintotheinvisible,mymindwasfilledwithsongs.Ifoundmyselfhummingsoftly,nottothemusic,buttosomethingelse,someplaceelse,aplaceremembered,aplaceuntouched,afieldofgrasswherenooneseemedtohavebeenexceptthedeer.
