“Thebenefitsofobesitypreventionmaynotbeseenimmediatelyintermsofcostsavingintomorrow’sbudget,buttherearelong-termgains,”saidBaal.“Theseareoftenimmeasurablewhenitcomestopeoplelivinglongerandhealthierlives.”Inthemeanwhile,hesaidthatgovernmentsshouldrecognizethatsuccessfulsmokingandobesitypreventionprogramsmeanthatpeoplewillhaveahigherchanceofdyingofsomethingmoreexpensivelaterinlife.
“Lungcancerisacheapdiseasetotreatbecausepeopledon’tsurviveverylong.ButiftheyareoldenoughtogetAlzheimer’s(早老性痴呆病)oneday,theymaysurvivelongerandcostmore.Wearenotadvisingthatgovernmentsstoptryingtopreventobesity,”Baalsaid.“Buttheyshoulddoitfortherightreasons.”
