Abstract

Hawthorne is a master of symbolism.There appear many symbols of different kinds inhis works,which are worthy of further study.This thesis uses documentation research and textinterpretation to study symbolism on Hawthorne,resulting in a synthetic and systematicanalysis and conclusion of symbols used in his works.It is exceedingly helpful for readers tounderstand the artistic feature and the themes of his works.Symbols in Hawthorne’s workscan be classified into five types.The first type is the symbolic objects from Nature.Theyappear in his several works,and all have multiple symbolic meanings.The second type iscolor as symbol,which is an unique artistic characteristic of Hawthorne’s works.In his works,different colors are endowed with distinctive symbolic meanings,which reveal the emotionsof the characters and create special atmospheres.Consequently,the themes of his works canbe expressed more effectively.The third type is the typical symbols appearing in these worksand also the titles of them.They run through the novels or short stories,and build up theframework,linking all the characters and plots together.The fourth type is name symbols.Hawthorne uses denomination of characters to portray the personalities of the characters,andaccordingly,more effectively expresses the themes of his works.The last type is charactersymbols.Hawthorne shapes some representative characters,each of whom stands for aspecific group with certain characteristics,or implies special connotation for other characters.In summary,symbolism is an unique artistic feature of Hawthorne’s works,making his worksrenowned all around the world

霍桑以“象征主义大师”著称于世。

许多不同种类的象征手法出现在他的作品中，值得我们进行深入研究。

本文运用文献综述法和文本解读法研究霍桑的象征主义,对霍桑作品中的象征进行了系统的、综合的分析和总结，这极其有利于读者理解他作品的艺术特色和主题，霍桑作品中的象征可分为五种。

第一种是大自然中的具有象征意义的物体。

他们同时出现在霍桑的多部作品中，并且都具有多重的象征意义。

第二种是颜色象征。

颜色象征是霍桑作品的独特艺术特色。

在他的作品中，不同的颜色被赋予各种独特的象征意义，它们表现人物的感情，塑造特殊的氛围，从而更有效地表达作品的主题。

第三种是他作品中出现的具有典型性的象征，他们同时也出现在这些作品的标题中。

它们贯穿这些作品的全文，构成基本框架，把所有人物和情节联系起来。

第四种是名字象征。

霍桑用特殊命名法刻画人物以突出作品的主题。

第五种是人物象征。

霍桑塑造了一些具有代表性的人物，他们代表具有某种性格特点的特定团体，或者对作品中的其他人物具有一定的象征意义。

总之，象征主义是霍桑作品的一大艺术特色，它使霍桑的作品闻名于世。

Introduction

Hawthorne is considered to be the most outstanding American romantic writer in the19th century.In his life time,he created and published lots of brilliant literary works,which have a deep influence on American literature.A distinctive feature of almost all hisworks is the successful application of symbolism,which enhances the artistic effects ofhis works greatly.Thus he is extolled as“a great master of symbolism”and“the prophetof symbolism”.

Symbolism in its broad sense is the use of one object to represent or suggest another,or in literature,the use of symbols in writing,particularly the serious and extensive use ofsuch symbols.Just as characterization,dialogue and plot work on the surface to move thestory along,symbolism works under the surface to tie the story’s external action to thetheme.

Symbolism is also the most distinctive artistic technique used in Hawthorne’s works.A variety of symbol
