1.Introduction
Energyconservationmeasure(ECM)isapracticeconductedinabuildingforthepurposeofreducingenergyconsumptioncausedbytheelectricalsystemssuchaslighting,heating,ventilationandairconditioningsystems.ECMisalsoawaytodetermineseveralpotentialalternativesforreducingenergyconsumptionanddecidingwhichalternativesmustbeimplemented.Energyconservationmustbedonewithoutsacrificingthecomfortoftheoccupantsinthebuilding.ECMshavebeenimplementedwidelyinbuildingsforenergysavinginitiativesintherecentyears.ECMscanbecategorizedbasedontheamountoffinancialinvestmentinvolvedinitsimplementations:
zeroinvestment,minorinvestmentandmajorinvestment.TherearetwobasicwaysofconservingenergyusingtheECMapproach.Thefirstmethodinvolvesphysicalalterationsoradditionstotheexistingsysteminthebuildingsuchascompletesystemreplacementsorinstallationofsensorsforlightingsystem,andthesecondmethodrequiresonlychangestotheoperationofthesystemsuchasscheduledlightingsorairconditioningoperatingtimes.
Sincetheuseofheating,ventilationandairconditioning(HVAC)systemaccountsforoneofthehighestpercentageofenergyuseinabuilding,ECMforHVACsystemsisapopularresearchtopicandhasattractedmanybuildingownersintheirefforttominimizethebuildings'
energyconsumption.ECMsonHVACsystemsalsoresultinthehighestenergysavingpotentialcomparedtoitsapplicationontheotherelectricalsystemsinabuilding.HVAC'
sECMscaneitherbeazeroinvestmentECMby,forinstance,changingthethermostattemperaturesetting;
oramajorinvestmentECMby,forexample,replacingtheexistingHVACsystemwithamoreenergy-efficientHVACsystem.
Intherecentyears,ECMsfocusingonHVACoperationschedulingbecomespopularbecauseoftheconsiderablyhighenergysavingpotentialthatitcanprovide.Someoftheoperationsschedulingtechniquesarediscussedin.Intheseproposedtechniques,theschedulingprocessesarequitesimpleandaremainlybasedontheoccupancyofthebuilding.Forexample,ifthebuildingisoccupied,thesetpointtemperatureoftheair-conditioningsystemwillbereduced,andduringunoccupiedtime,thesetpointwillbechangedtohighertemperatures.Thesesetpointtemperaturesmustalsobewithinthethermalcomfortrangesoasnottosacrificethecomfortofthebuilding'
soccupantsintheefforttoreducetheenergyconsumption.Also,inmostofthepreviouslyusedHVACschedulingapproaches,theHVACisoperatedfor24hdailywiththenightsetbacktechnique,whichisanapproachtoreduceenergyusagebyincreasingthesetpointtemperatureduringunoccupiedhours.This,ingeneral,doesnotmaximizetheenergysavingpotentialoftheairconditioningsystem.Therefore,agreatnumbersofschedulingtechniqueshavebeenproposedanddevelopedforthepurposeofmaximizingtheenergysavingpotentialwhilepreservingthecomfortoftheoccupantsinthebuildingorthespace.
Inthispaper,severalmethodsofschedulingtheHVACoperationarediscussed.ThemethodsaredividedintoseveralclassesanddiscussedinSection2ofthispaperwiththeillustrationofthetemperaturesetpointthroughoutthedayaccordingtotherelatedsources.Firstly,thesimplemethodsofHVACschedulingareexplained.Thisisfollowedbythediscussionontheconventionalschedulingtechniquesthatprimarilyaimtoreducethepeakenergydemand.AnotherclassofHVACschedulingmethodsdiscussedinSection2istheadvancedschedulingmethod.Thediscussionsmainlyfocusonhoweachschedulingtechniqueworks,whatmakesitdifferentfromotherschedulingtechniques,theenergysavingpotentialaswellasitslimitationsandpossiblemodificationsthatcanbemade.Section3willdiscussabouttheuseofcomfortindex,PredictedMeanVote(PMV)anditsrelationshipwithoutdoortemperature.ThepaperendswithasummaryandconclusionsthatcanbedrawnfromalltheschedulingtechniquesexplainedthatalsoincludessomerecommendationsfordevelopingnewHVACschedulingtechniques.
2.TypesofHVACscheduling
Inthispaper,theHVACschedulingtechniquesaredividedintothreeclasses;
basictechniques,conventionaltechniquesandadvancedtechniques.Thebasicschedulingtechniqueinvolvesonlythemanipulationofthe‘ON’and‘OFF’statesoftheHVACsystem.Meanwhile,intheconventionalschedulingtechnique,thesetpointtemperaturesoftheHVACsystemaremanipulat
