Latelastyear,engineerscelebrated(庆祝)thecompletionofrepairstotheLeaningTowerofPisa.ItalianofficialsclosedtheLeaningTowerforsafetyreasonsmorethanadecadeago.Expertsnowsaytherepairswillmakethebuildingsafeforatleastafewmorecenturies.
TheLeaningTowerisfamousaroundtheworld.ManyvisitorstoItalytraveltothecityofPisatoseetheunusual-lookingstructure.Theroundtowerismorethaneight-hundredyearsold.
TheLeaningTowerofPisaiseasytorecognize.Thewhitestonebuildingissinking(沉陷),orleaning,ononeside.Thetowerisaboutfifty-fivemetershigh.Itssouthsideismuchlowerthanitsnorthside.
TheLeaningTowerisleaningbecauseitwasbuiltonsoftsandysoil.Thesoilcannotsupportitsweight.Thetowerweighsaboutfourteen-thousand-five-hundredmetrictons.Thegroundunderthetowerfirststartedtosinksoonafterworkersbeganbuildingthestructureintheyear1173.

AninternationalteamofbuildingexpertsbeganaprojecttomakesuretheLeaningTowerdoesnotfalldown.Theprojectcostabouttwenty-fivemilliondollars.
First,engineersplacedeight-hundred-seventymetrictonsoflead(铅)weightsonthenorthsideofthetower.Thishelpedstopadditionalmovement.
Also,workerstidestrongsteelcables(钢索)aroundthestructure.Thesewireswereconnectedtolargeweightsinthearea.
Next,engineersslowlyremoved(移动)tonsofsoilfromunderthetower.Theyusedspecialdrills(钻孔机)toremovesmallamountsofsoiloverseveralmonths.
Slowlythetowermovedbacktowhereitstoodhundredsofyearsago.Itstillleans,butnotasmuchasbeforetherepairs.
RecentlytheareaaroundtheLeaningToweropenedtothepublicagain,thoughonlyaboutthirtyvisitorsarepermittedtoclimbthetoweratonetime.
Ⅱ.AbuSimbel
AbuSimbelisthesiteoftemplesbuiltbytheEgyptianKingRamsesⅡ.ThefourlargefiguresofRamsesinfrontofthemaintemplecanberegardedasoneofthemostspectacularexampleofancientEgyptianart.
CarvedoutofasandstonecliffonthewestbankoftheNile,southofKorosko,neartheSudanesefrontier,thetempleswereunknowntotheoutsideworlduntiltheirrediscoveryin1813.Theywerefirstexploredin1817.
The20metreseatedfiguresofRamsesweresetagainsttherecessedfaceofthecliff,twooneithersideoftheentrancetothemaintemple.CarvedaroundtheirfeetweresmallfiguresrepresentingRamses’queenandtheirchildren.Thetempleitself,dedicatedtothesungod,consistedofthreehallsextending185feetintothecliffwithmorefiguresoftheKingandwithpaintedreliefsshowinghislifeandachievements.
Between1964and1966aworkforceandaninternationalteamofengineersandscientists,supportedbyfundsfrommorethan50countries,dugawaythetopofthecliffandcompletelydisassembledthetemples,reconstructingthemonhighground200feetabovetheriverbed.
Ⅲ.ProtectingtheSphinx
Themostfamousstatue—theSphinxinEgypthasbeendamaged.Theexpertsaregoingtofindoutthecausetoprotectit.
TheSphinxhasthebodyofalionandthefaceofaman.ItwascutfromlinestonenearEgyptpyramidabout1600yearsago.NotlongbeforealargepieceofstonefellfromtheSphinx’rightshoulder.Toprotectthestatuefrommoreharm,acomputerwasplacedonittomeasurerainfall,windspeedandairtemperature.Thecomputeralsomeasuretheamountofwaterandairpollution,thedirectionofwindandthetemperatureofthestatueitself.Theeffectsofage,wind,waterandpollutionhavegreatlyweakenedtheSphnix.Sunlight,wind,waterandpollutionhavebeenerodingtheoutsideofthestatureforcenturies.Theexpertshopethattheinformationfromthecomputerwillhelpitfrommoredamage.TheysaythemoretheyknowaboutwhatisdestroyingtheSphnix,themoretheycandotoprotectit.
