Ofthosewhoweretoldtheywereobese,90percentwerealsotoldbytheirdoctorstoloseweight,thesurveyfound.Infactmosthavetriedtoloseweightandmayhavebeensuccessfulinthepast—andmanyarestilltrying,thesurveyfound.Andmanyunderstandthatlosingevenasmallamountofweightcanhaveapositiveimpactontheirhealthandreducetheirriskofobesityrelateddiseaseslikehypertensionanddiabetes.

Dr.WilliamBestermannJr.,medicaldirectorofHolstonMedicalGroup,inKingsport,Tenn.,whichranksthe10thinobesityamongmetropolitanareasintheUnitedStates,saidthedialoguehadtobeanongoingoneandcouldnotbedroppedafterjustonementionoftheproblem.“Ifyou’retobesuccessfulwithhelpingyourpatientsloseweight,youhavetotalktothematactuallyeveryvisitabouttheirprogress,andfindsomethingtoencouragethemandcoachthem,”hesaid.

Heacknowledgedthatmanydoctorstendtobenotoptimistic.
