Pleasefindattachedourmanuscriptentitled“Anewinsightintoductilefractureofultrafine-grainedAl-Mgalloys”whichwewishtosubmitforpossiblepublicationinScientificReports.Thismanuscript,oranypartofit,hasnotbeenpublishedandwillnotbesubmittedelsewhereforpublicationwhilebeingconsideredbyScientificReports.ThemanuscripthasnotbeendiscussedwithaScientificReportsEditorpriortosubmission.Theauthorsdeclarethattherearenocompetingfinancialinterests.
Theauthorshaveacollectiveresearchbackgroundunifyingnanoscalematerials,metalsandalloys,compositematerials,fractureanddamagemechanics,appliedphysics,andmechanicalproperties.Inthecurrentstudy,wehavediscoveredarelationshipbetweentheductilefracturemechanismandgrainrefinementofultrafine-grained/nanostructuredmetals.Wefoundthatthemeangrainsizeatfractureendapproachesthetheoreticalminimumachievablemeangrainsizevaluethatdirectlydeterminesthefracturebehaviorofmetalspostnecking.Thisfindingwillbeamilestoneinfracturemechanicsandnanostructuredmaterials.Thusthisworkwillbeofgreatinteresttoreadersofvariousscientificdisciplines,inparticularmaterialsscientistsandphysicistsworkingonnanostructuredmaterialsaswellasmicromechanics.
Inthepast50years,manyductilefracturecriteriahavebeenproposed.Thebasicprinciplesuponwhichductilefracturecriteriaarebasedcanbegenerallydividedintofourcategories:
(a)energydissipation;
(b)voidgrowth:
materialmodeling;
(c)voidgrowth:
growthmechanisms;
and(d)voidgrowth:
voidgeometry.Itisassumedthatthefractureevolutiondirectlydependsonthestrength,strainhardeningcapabilityandstrainratesensitivityofthematrixsurroundingthevoids.Noneofthesecriteriaarerelatedtothemicrostructurechangeinductilefractureprocessing.Inthecurrentstudy,itisproposedforthefirsttimethatfeaturesofthemicrostructurenearthefracturesurfacecanbeusedtoexplaintheductilefracturepostneckingdirectly.Wefoundthatgrainsarerefinedtonanoscaleapproachingthetheoreticalminimumachievablevalueandbecomebrittleintheshearbandzone.Asexplainedinthepaper,theobservationsuggestedtheinnovativefive-stepductilefracturemechanism:
uniformelongation,voidnucleationandgrowth,localnecking,grainrefinementuntilthemeangrainsizeapproachestheminimumachievablemeangrainsize,andfinallydamage.
