InaStationoftheMetro

Theapparitionofthesefacesinthecrowd;

Petalsonawet,blackbough.

ThisistheonlyEzraPoundpoemthatmanypeoplewillreadintheirlives.Why?

Oneobviousreasonisthatit’sjusttwolineslong.Thepoem,whichcanbeunderstoodas“Amanseesabunchoffacesinthesubwayandthinkstheylooklikeflowersonatreebranch,”isanexerciseinshortness.PoundwroteitafterhavingaspiritualexperienceinaParismetro（subway）station.

In1916,theUSpoetoriginallythoughthecouldbestdescribehisvisioninapainting.Unfortunately,hewasn’tapainter.Sohewroteathirty-linepoem,whichhedidn’tlike.Hedroppedthelongversioninthewastebin.Sixmonthslater,hewroteashorterpoem,butdidn’tlikethatoneeither.Finally,afullyearaftertheexperience,hehadbeenreadingshortJapanesepoemscalledhaikus,andhefiguredhewouldtrythisstyle.Theresult,whichwaspublishedin1913,isoneofthemostfamousandinfluentialworksinmodernpoetry.

Thispoemisoneofthemonuments（纪念物）ofthe20th-centuryartisticmovementknownas“Imagism”.Basically,Poundandhisfriendsthoughtthatimages（意象）weren’tjustdecoration:

theywerethehighestformofspeech.Byfindingtherightimage,thepoetcanexpressthetrue,spiritualrealityofathing,whichismoreimportantthanusingabunchofadjectivestodescribeitsphysicalappearance.Thus,“InaStationoftheMetro”isapoemthatconsistsofoneimageexpressedwithabsolute（绝对的）exactnessandnothingelse.
