斯诺（CharlesPercySnow，1905–—1980）是英国小说家、科学家和教育家。

他的作品可分为4类：

①小说，其中以《陌生人和兄弟们》最为著名。

②报告文集，如《两种文化与科学革命》、《公共事务》等③评论，有《英国现实主义小说》等。

④戏剧，如：

《家庭聚会》。

选文内容

在选文中，斯诺对“两种文化”的观念做了详细的阐述。

他认为西方社会已丧失了共同文化。

随着科学的发展，自然科学和人文科学日益分化，形成两种日益对立的文化。

两种文化缺乏共同的基础，彼此难以沟通。

这种情况会对政府决策产生不良影响，给人民和社会造成不应有的损失。

为此他提出警告，呼吁两种文化加强合作，以促进社会的发展。

斯诺也进一步澄清了他对“个人处境”（theindividualcondition）与“社会处境”（thesocialcondition）的看法，并指出，人们不能因为“个人处境”的悲剧性而对“社会处境”中出现的问题，如贫困、落后、饥馑等无所作为。

他认为解决这些问题的出路在于科学革命，西方国家人民负有义不容辞的责任帮助发展中国家尽早实现科学革命，从根本上摆脱贫困，消除东西方国家之间的贫富差距。

斯诺呼吁进行教育改革，培养大批通晓两种文化的人才，使之肩负起帮助人类消灭贫困的责任。
