Chipmunks

Theearthiscoveredwithmillionsofspeciesofanimals,andeachisresponsibleforfillinganimportantnicheinthedelicateecosystemoftheplanet.Thechipmunk,althoughsmallinsize,isnolessvitaltothehealthofahabitat.ChipmunksaresmallrodentsthatinhabittheforestsofNorthAmericaandAsia.Thereare25differentspeciesofchipmunks.Manyofthemaremarkedbytheirreddish-brownfurwithwhiteandblackstripesthatcoverthelengthoftheirbodies.

Unlikemanyofitsrodentrelatives,thechipmunkhastwobreedingseasonsayear.ThefirstspansfromFebruarytoApril,andthesecondfromJunetoAugust.Theaveragenumberofoffspringforachipmunkisfour,buttherehavebeenlittersassmallasoneandasbigasnine.Motherskeeptheiryounghiddenundergroundintheirhomesforuptosixweeksuntiltheyareoldenoughtofendforthemselves.Someoftheirnaturalpredatorsincludecats,dogs,eagles,hawks,foxes,coyotesandwolves.Inthewild,achipmunk’slifespanistypicallyonlyayear,butsomehavebeenknowntoliveuptofiveyears.

Althoughmatingseasonisanexception,chipmunksspendmostoftheirtimealonebuildingtheirhomes,lookingforfood,andhidingfrompredators.Theyareoftenfoundclimbingintreeslookingforfood.

Chipmunksaretraditionallyhoarders.Theyspendthespringandsummerstockingtheirburrowswithnuts,seeds,insects,berries,andotherfoodsinordertohibernateduringthelongwinterwithoutstarving.Othersourcesoffoodincludefungi,bird’seggs,grain,andworms.

Oneofthemostremarkablefeaturesofchipmunksistheircheeks.Chipmunkshavespecialpouchesonbothsidesoftheirheadthatcanbes
