TheUnitedStatescoversalargepartoftheNorthAmericancontinent.ItsneighborsareCanadatothenorthandMexicotothesouth.AlthoughtheUnitedStatesisabigcountry,itisnotthelargestintheworld.In2000,itspopulationwasover222million.

Whenthislandfirstbecameanation,afterwinningitsindependencefromEngland,ithadthirteenstates.EachofthestateswasrepresentedontheAmericanflagbyastar.Allthesewereintheeasternpartofthecontinent.Asthenationgrewtowardthewest,newstateswereaddedandnewstarsappearedontheflag.Foralongtime,therewere48stars.In1959,however,twomorestarswereaddedtotheflag,representingthenewstatesofAlaskaandHawaii.

IndianswerethefirstpeopleofthelandwhichisnowtheUnitedStates.TherearestillmanythousandsofIndiansnowlivinginallpartsofthecountry.SometimesitissaidthattheIndiansare“theonlyrealAmericans”.MostAmericanscomefromallovertheworld.ThosewhocamefirstingreatestnumberstomaketheirhomesontheeasternofNorthAmericaweremostlyfromEngland.ItisforthereasonthatthelanguageoftheUnitedStatesisEnglishandthatitscultureandcustomsaremorelikethoseofEnglandthanthoseofanyothercountryintheworld.
