  Creditcarddebtamongcollegestudentshasbeenagrowingconcernforresearchersandpolicymakersoverthelastdecade.Inaddition,thereisgrowingconcernamongeducatorsthatmorestudentsaredroppingoutofschool,notbecauseofacademicfailure,butbecauseoffinancialreasons,andcreditcardsespecially.Hancockandcolleagues’studyisthefirsttoexaminehowparentalinteractions,andfinancialknowledgeandattitudesmayhaveacumulativeeffect(累积效应)onthenumberofcreditcardsstudentsownandtheirlevelofcreditcarddebt.

  Theresearchersanalyzeddatafor420undergraduatestudentsfromsevendifferentAmericanuniversities,whotookpartintheCollegeStudentFinancialLiteracySurvey.Accordingtotheonlinesurvey,nearlytwo-thirdsofstudentshadacreditcard,andnearlyathirdhadmorethanone.Thosestudentswhoreportedthattheirparentsarguedaboutfinancesweremorelikelytohavemorethantwocardsthanthestudentswhoseparentsdidnotargueaboutfinances.

  Intermsofdebt,thosestudentswhohadtwoormorecreditcardswerenearlythreetimesmorelikelytoreporthavingcreditcarddebtover$500.

  Theresearchersconclude,“Itisclearthattheinfluenceofparentscannotbeneglected.Researchers,educatorsandpolicymakersshouldworkinfindingeffectivewaystoincreasethepositivefinancialbehaviorsforcollegestudents.Weneedtohelpstudentslearnfinancialskillsandestablishhealthyfinancialattitudesatearlieragestopreventpoorfinancialhabitsfromtakingroot.”
