1.1TheWhat,WhyandHowofApacheOFBiz

ThebasicstructureanddrivingforcebehindOFBizhasalottodowiththegoalsandactualizationofthereleaseprocess.

OFBizisandalwayshasbeenacommunity-drivenopensourceproject.ThereisnocentralcommercialorganizationthatdrivesthedevelopmentofOFBizorderivesaprojectfromtheintellectualpropertyofthesoftwareorotherprojectassets.ThisisformalizednowthatOFBizisaprojectintheApacheSoftwareFoundation.

BecauseofthisOFBizalwayshasbeenandalwayswillbejustwhatuserswhocontributetotheprojectwantittobe.Therearemanydifferentindividualsandgroupsinvolvedwithmanydifferentneedsandourgoalistodefineandfollowdevelopmentandreleasepoliciesthatservetheneedsoftheseparties.

1.2.HowDoIDecideWhattoUse?

FromaprojectuserperspectivethereisonemainquestionthatcanhelpdeterminewhichwaytheywillwanttogetOFBiz:

Iwanttocontributetodesign,coding,andtestingeffortsandtherebycollaboratewithotherstomoreeffectivelyandefficientlysatisfythelong-termrequirementsfromme,myclients,ormyemployer

Iwanttostayonthecuttingedgeandparticipatewithtestingandfeedback,butI'mnotinapositiontoparticipateindevelopmentand/orinthenearfutureIwillneedsomethingmorereliableandsupportedandthatwon'tchangeverymuch

ForeachanswerthereisarecommendedwaytogetOFBiz:

4Getthecodestraightfromthecoderepository（SVN）trunkandupdatefrequentlythroughdevelopment,stoppingbeforeyourintegrationorfinalpre-deploymenttesting,andperiodicallyevenafterproductiondeploymentaccordingtoyourongoingdevelop/deployplan;notethatwhenyouarenotupdatingfromSVNyoushouldcontinuetowatchthecommitsforbugfixestopatchintoyourcodebase

5Getthecodefromthecoderepository（SVN）releasebranchandkeepupdatedorpatchedregularlyasfixesarecommittedandthebranchstabilizesovertime;whengettingstartedchoosethemostrecentbranch,evenifitisverynew;whennewreleasebranchesarecreatedupdatetothemsoonafterthebranchisdone

6Getabuiltreleasepackageorthecodefromareleasebranchtag,andupdateasnewpre-builtreleasepackagesandtagsarecreated;thesewillonlyrepresentfixesandunlessamajorissuearisestheywillbebackwardcompatibleandgenerallysafetoupdateorpatchto;whengettingstartedchooseareleasebranchthathasbeenaroundforatleast2-3monthsandthathasnomajoroutstandingissuesintheissuetrackertoassurethatithasstabilized;whennewreleasebranchesarecreatedwaituntilyouarereadytodoamajorupgradeandpossiblyneedtomodifyyourcodeandconfiguration,andwaitatleastuntiltheprospectivebranchhasstabilizedbeforemovingtoit
