Havingspentover30yearsatEmoryresearchingandpracticingstorytellingwithher,IampleasedPresidentSterkischoosingstorytellingasherthemeasouruniversity’sleader.

Myblogshavefocusedonthevalueoffamilystorytellingfordevelopingidentityinlife.Similarly,collectivestorytellingwithinmunitiesbuildsidentity.

MyEmorycolleaguesandIhavebeeninvolvedintellingtheEmorystoryformanyyears,butonereallyfunplanwebeganafewyearsagowasEmoryStoryCircles.WeorganizedaseriesofstorytellingeventsbuiltonideasfromNPR’SstoryCorpsandgrassrootsmunityorganizers,touseourpersonalandEmorystories,tocreatebonds.Inthesestorycirclesofabout8peopleincludingstudents,staffandmunitymembers,eachpersontoldapersonalstoryconnectingthemtotheinstitution.

Ourfirststorycirclewasco-ledbySalmanRusdie,thegreatauthor.Hetreatedusallwithstoriesabouthisexperiencesasacollegestudentstudyinghistory.Thenwebrokeintoourownstorycircles,andeachofustoldourownstoryaboutourEmoryexperience.Throughthesestories,connectionsbetweenfacultyandstudents,collegeandmunity,weremademoretransparent.

Sincethatfirststorycircle,wehaveorganizedseveralmore.Thoseparticipatinginastorycirclewithuswentonandorganizedtheirownstorycircleswhicharepowerfulwaysofconnectingeachother.Whenwelistentoothers’stories,welearnsomethingaboutthemandalsoourselves.Welearnwhatisimportantandvaluableinourlives.
