Withtheoccurrenceofthesecond-wavefeminismintheWestduring1960s,movieasakindofarthasenteredthefeminists’vision.Through

politicalpracticeandartisticpractice,new-generationofwesternfeministspushedthemoviesonfeminismtothestageofhistory.FortheU.S.filmandtelevisionindustry,theperiodof1960swasaturningpoint,becausemoreandmorefilmsandtelevisionprogramsportrayedagroupoffemalefigureswhosecharacterswereindependent,braveandfortitudinous.

LouiseisoneoftypicalmoviesproducedinHollywoodwhichrepresentsfeminismin1990s.Throughanalyzingthismovie,wewillgetafurtherunderstandingofAmericancultureandsociety.

Chapter2ModernFeminismintheWest

IntheUnitedStates,feminismmovementhasneverstopped.Thesuffragettemovement,whichcampaignedforwomen’srightstovote,

happenedintheearlytwentiethcentury.Sincethe1960sthewomen’s

movementhasbeenengagedinasystematicandconstantcritiqueofmediainstitutionsandtheiroutput.

2.1TheoryofFeminism

Feministtheoryistheextensionoffeminismintotheoreticalorphilosophicaldiscourse,whichaimstounderstandthenatureofgenderinequality.Itexamineswomen’ssocialrolesandlivedexperience,andfeministpoliticsinavarietyoffields,suchasanthropologyandsociology,

psychoanalysis,economics,literarycriticism,andphilosophy.Whilegenerallyprovidingacritiqueofsocialrelations,mostoffeministtheoryalsofocusesonanalyzinggenderinequalityandthepromotionofwomen’srights,interests,

andissues.Themesexploredinfeminismincludearthistoryandcontemporaryart,aesthetics,discrimination,stereotyping,objectification,oppression,andpatriarchy.

2.2DevelopmentofFeminism

FeminismbeganintheeighteencenturytheFrenchRevolution,whichsymbolizesthatwomenandmenwouldbeequaloneday.Thedevelopmentoffeminismmovementcouldbedividedintothreewaves.

First-wavefeminismreferstoanextendedperiodoffeministactivityduringthenineteenthcenturyandearlytwentiethcenturyintheUnitedKingdomandtheUnitedStates.Originallyitfocusedonthepromotionofequalcontractandpropertyrightsforwomenandtheoppositiontochattelmarriageandownershipofmarriedwomenbytheirhusbands.

IntheUnitedStates,first-wavefeminismisconsideredtohaveendedwiththepassageoftheNineteenthAmendmenttotheUnitedStatesConstitution(1919),grantingwomentherighttovote.LeadersofthefeministmovementcampaignedfortheabolitionofslaveryandTemperancepriortochampioningwomen’srights.Americanfirst-wavefeminisminvolvedawiderangeofwomen,somebelongingtoconservativeChristiangroups.

Second-wavefeminismreferstotheperiodoffeministactivityintheearly1960sandlastingthroughthelate1980s.SecondWavefeminismsawculturalandpoliticalinequalitiesasinextricablylinked.Themovementencouragedwomentounderstandaspectsoftheirpersonallivesasdeeplypoliticized,andreflectiveofasexiststructureofpower.

Thephrase“Women’sLiberation”wasfirstusedintheUnitedStatesin

1964andfirstappearedinprintin1966.By1968,althoughthetermWomen’s

LiberationFrontappearedinthemagazineRamparts,itwasstartingtoreferto

thewholewomen’smovement.Bra-burningalsobecameassociatedwiththemovement,thoughtheactualprevalenceofbra-burningisdebatable.Oneofthemostvocalcriticsofthewomen’sliberationmovementhasbeenthe

AfricanAmericanfeministandintellectualGloriaJeanWatkins(whousesthepseudonym“bellhooks”)whoarguesthatthismovementglossedoverrace

andclassandthusfailedtoaddress“theissuesthatdividedwomen.”She

highlightedthelackofminorityvoicesinthewomen’smovementinherbook

Feministtheoryfrommargintocenter(1984).

Third-wavefeminismbeganintheearly1990s,arisingasaresponsetoperceivedfailuresofthesecondwaveandalsoasaresponsetothebacklashagainstinitiativesandmovementscreatedbythesecondwave.

Third-wavefeminismalsocontainsinternaldebatesbetweendifferencefeministssuchasthepsychologistCarolGilligan(whobelievesthatthereareimportantdifferencesbetweenthesexes)andthosewhobelievethattherearenoinherentdifferencesbetweenthesexesandcontendthatgenderrolesareduetosocialconditioning.

Post-feminismdescribesarangeofviewpointsreactingtofeminism.Whilenotbeing“anti-feminist”,post-feministsbelievethatwomenhave

achievedsecondwavegoalswhilebeingcriticalofthirdwavefeministgoals.Thetermwasfirstusedinthe1980stodescribeabacklashagainstsecond-wavefeminism.Itisnowalabelfor
