ThiseditionofNFPA13D,StandardfortheInstallationofSprinklerSystemsinOne-andTwo-FamilyDwellingsandManufacturedHomes,waspreparedbytheTechnicalCommitteeonResidentialSprinklerSystems,releasedbytheTechnicalCorrelatingCommitteeonAutomaticSprinklerSystems,andactedonbytheNationalFireProtectionAssociation,Inc.,atitsMayMeetingheldMay17-20,1999,inBaltimore,MD.ItwasissuedbytheStandardsCouncilonJuly22,1999,withaneffectivedateofAugust13,1999,andsupersedesallpreviouseditions.

Changesotherthaneditorialareindicatedbyaverticalruleinthemarginofthepagesonwhichtheyappear.Theselinesareincludedasanaidtotheuserinidentifyingchangesfromthepreviousedition.

ThiseditionofNFPA13DwasapprovedasanAmericanNationalStandardonAugust13,1999.

OriginandDevelopmentofNFPA13D

Recognizingtheneedtoreducetheannuallifelossfromfireinresidentialoccupancies（about50percentoftotallossoflifebyfire）,theCommitteeonAutomaticSprinklersappointedasubcommitteeinMay1973topreparetheStandardontheInstallationofSprinklerSystemsinOne-andTwo-FamilyDwellingsandMobileHomes.ThesubcommitteewascomposedofmembersoftheCommitteeonAutomaticSprinklersandothertechnicallycompetentexperts.ThestandardwassubmittedandadoptedattheNFPAAnnualMeetinginChicago,IL,onMay12-16,1975.

The1980editionwasacompleterewriteofthe1975edition,includingSIunitswhereappropriate.The1980editionincorporatedtheresultsoftheresidentialsprinklertestprogramadministeredbytheNationalFireProtectionAssociationandfundedbyaresearchgrantfromtheUnitedStatesFireAdministration.FactoryMutualResearchCorporationandtheLosAngelesCityFireDepartmentconductedthedwellingtests.FactoryMutualResearchCorporation,McNearyInsuranceConsultingServices,andtheCharlotte,NorthCarolina,FireDepartmentconductedthemobilehometests.

Aftergainingpracticalexperienceusingthe1980edition,modificationstothestandard,includingremovalofdesignparametersfordrypipesystems,weremadeinthe1984edition.

The1989and1991editionsestablishedcriteriafortheuseofantifreezesystemsaswellassomeoftheinstallationcriteriaassociatedwithspeciallylistedpipingmaterials.

The1994editionprovidedexpandedinformationonnonmetallicpipeandintroducedanewdesignoptionthatreducedwaterstoragerequirementsforlimitedareadwellings.

The1996editionofthestandardincludedexpandedinformationontheuseandplacementofresidentialsprinklersnearheatsources.Forthefirsttimesince1941,theuseof1/2-in.（12.7-mm）pipingmaterialwaspermittedagainforsprinklersystemsunderspecificconditions.Anumberofappendixfigureswerealsoaddedtoaddressmethodsforprotectingpipefromfreezinginunheatedattics.

The1999editionrevisescriteriaforcertaintypesofmultipurposepipingsystemsandaddsrequirementstomitigatetheeffectofwatersoftenersandfiltersonsystemperformance.Informationontheapplicationofsolventcementfornonmetallicpipingsystemshasbeenprovidedandtheexceptionforomittingsprinklercoverageinatticsandcrawlspaceshasbeenmodified.
