Voynich’snovelisathrillingaccountofrevolutionaryenthusiasm,religiousdevotion,clericalbetrayalandromanticlove—thephilosopherBertrandRussellcalledit“oneofthemostexcitingnovelsIhaveread”.ItwaspublishedinNewYorkin1897,twoyearsafteritscompletion,asitsEnglishpublisherfearedanegativereaction—onereviewercriticizedthebook’s“shockingandhorriblecharacter”.AtranslationappearedthefollowingyearinRussia,wherethetsarist(沙皇)authorities’disapprovalonlyenhanceditspopularity.
