FromPoplartoIslandGardens,anewlinecrosseshighabovethedockwaters,andthenjoinstheoldtrackoftheMillwallExtensionRailway,builttoservicetheMillwallDocks（1868）andtoprovidetransportforworkersinthelocalfactories.Thislinewashorse-drawnforpartofitsroute,untilthe1880s.
ThePoplartoStratfordsectionoftheDLRroutewasfirstdevelopedbytheNorthLondonRailway,builtinthe1850stolinktheWestandEastIndiaDockswiththemanufacturingdistrictsoftheMidlandsandNorthofEngland.Thereweremajorrailwayworksandsidings（岔线）atBowuntilrecently.
Thetrainsareautomaticallycontrolledfromacentralcomputer,whichdealswithallsignalingandothersafetyfactors,aswellasadjustingspeedstokeepwithinthetimetable;
