Aims&

Objectives

Thiscourseintroducesthesubjectareaofinternationalpoliticaleconomy.Itisintendedforstudentswhohavehadnopreviousbackgroundinthesubjectorineconomics.ItbeginswiththemainschoolsofthinkingaboutInternationalPoliticalEconomyandexaminesinternationalexchangesofmoneyandtrade,includinghowtheyhavechangedoverrecentdecades.Thecoursealsolooksatproblemsofunder-developmentanddebt.Theroleofnon-stateactors,andthegrowthofregionalismandglobalisationinthecontemporaryworldeconomyarealsoexamined.

CourseRequirements

∙Activeandinformedparticipationintutorialdiscussions.

∙Anessayofamaximumof2000wordstobesubmittedbyFriday4November2011,at12noon.

∙Afinalexamination（heldinDecember.Donotmaketravelplansuntilyouknowtheexamdate）.

Assessment

Yourmarkwillbebasedonthefollowingpercentages:

∙10%-tutorialparticipation（seebelowforfurtherguidance）.

∙40%-essay.Alistofessaytopicsappearsattheendofthisdocument.Essayswillbereturnedwithin3weeksoftheirdeadlineswithcommentsandamark.

∙50%-exam.Theexamisunseen,two-hoursinlength,inwhichstudentsanswertwoquestions.

MOCKEXAM:

wewillalsohaveanoptionalmockexamwhichyoumayparticipateinifyouwant.Itwon’taffectyourmarkeitherwaybutisintendedasaconfidence-buildingfeedbackexercise.Moreinformationwillbeprovidedduringthesemester.
