Introduction

IteachEnglishinHonghuamiddleschool,andteachgradenine.IloveEnglish.IamproudofbeinganEnglishteacherandhavebeenteachingEnglishforsevenyears.Mystudentsareenergeticandfullofsunlight.Ilovethem.I’msogladifeachofthemmakesalittleprogress.Nowtheycanrememberalmostthewordsofthetextbook.Theycanalsomaketheirownconversationsaccordingtothesubjects.

Listeningisabasiccomponentinourcommunication,butformostmiddleschoolstudents,amonglistening,speaking,readingandwritingskills,listeningisthemostdifficultone,thatistosay,itistheircommonweakness.Aftertheexams,theyoftencomplainedaboutlisteningcomprehensions.Theytoldmetheycouldn’tunderstandthelistingtextclearly.IknowthisistheproblemthatIshouldsolve.

Listeningcomprehensionisacomplexactivity.Itrequiresstudentstousetheirphonetics,vocabulary,grammarandbackgroundknowledge,somoststudentshavemanydifficultiesinlisteningcomprehension.Manylearnersareafraidoflistening,lookingonitasmoredifficultthananyotherskillsandpaymoreattentiontotrainingtheirabilitytospeak,readandwrite.Atthesametime,listeningisoftenignoredbybothteachersandstudents.

Whatcausethestudents’poorlistening?

Inmyopinion,thesearethefollowingfactors:

Objectivecause:

inruralmiddleschool,weoftenusechalks,ablackboardandatapetoteach.Wehardlyhaveanymodernteachingtoolssuchasmulti-medium.AndtherearedifferentculturesbetweenChineseandwesterners.Thestudentsknowlittleaboutit.

Subjectivecause:

thestudentsarenotinterestedinEnglish.Theythinklisteningisunimportant.Theypaylessattentiontoit.

Toarousethestudents’interestinlisteninglearning.

Tocorrectthestudents’badhabitsinlisteninglearning.

Toimprovethestudents’listeningskills.Maketheycatchthekeywordsandunderstandthemainideaofthelisteningmaterial.

IthinkstudentsmustbeinterestedinthembyplayingtheEnglishsongsandmovies.TheywilllikeEnglish,evenlikelisteninglearning.

Thestudentsalwaystrytheirbesttogetthemeaningofeachword,eachsentence.Sotellthestudentsthebestwaytolistentothetapeandpracticeseveraltimes.Thestudentswillbeeasiertounderstandthemainideathanbefore.

Thestudentsnotonlyrememberthewordsofthetextbookbutalsoremembersomewordsinotherarticles.Iftheydothis,theywillgetoverthedifficultwordstheymeetwhiletheyarelistening.

Afterclass,theyreadEnglishmagazinesandnewspaperinordertoenhancetheir
