AteamofJapaneseresearcherswasabletolinkgreenteaconsumptionwithdecreasedmortalityfrommanycauses-includingheartdisease.Theresearcherstracked40,530healthyadultsages40to79inaregionofnortheasternJapanwheremostpeopledrinkgreentea,followingthemforupto11years.Thosewhodrankfiveormorecupsofgreenteaadayhadsignificantlylowermortalityratesthanthosewhodranklessthanonecupaday.Therewerealsofewerdeathsfromcardiovasculardisease.
Butnosuchassociationwasseenwithdeathsfromcancer.Norwasconsumptionofoolongorblackteaconnectedwithanydecreaseinmortality.Thoseteasareeasiertobecombinedwithoxy-geninprocessing,whichnotonlydarkensthecoloroftheleavesandchangestheirflavorbutalsoreducestheirpolyphenolcontent.
