Marineanimalsaredividedintothreegroups:

zooplankton,nekton,andbenthos.Zooplanktonaredriftinganimalsandareusuallysmall,however,theycangrowtofairlylargesize.Forexample,thejellyfishandthePortugueseman-of-warareexamplesoflargertypesofzooplanktonwhichareunabletopropel(推进)themselveseffectively.

Nektonarethefreeswimmersandprobablythelargestportionoffamiliaranimalsfoundintheoceanbelongtothisclass.Commonfishes,theoctopus,whales,eelsandsquidareallexamplesofnekton.

Thethirdtypeofseaanimalspendsitsentirelifeonorintheoceanbottom.Thisgroupofmarineanimalsiscalledthebenthos.Someofthesecreatures,suchaslobstersandsnails,maybeabletomoveaboutonthebottombuttheirlifestyleissoboundupwiththeoceanfloorthattheyareunabletosurviveawayfromthisenvironment.
