WhenBabbagewasworkingatCambridge,anewideaoccurredtohim.Hewantedtoconstructacalculating（计算）machinetoworkoutthesolutionstomathsproblemsnotonlywithcorrectnessbutalsowithaspeedbeyondthepowerofanyhumanmind.Hismachinecouldsolveproblemsinvolvinglongrowsoffiguresinonecontinuousoperation（运算）.
In1822,Babbageexhibitedhisinventionandwonaprizefromthegovernment.Afterthat,heimmediatelystartedtoworkonalargermachinedesignedtosolvemoredifficultproblems.Althoughhereceivedsomemoneyleftbyhisfather,themoneywasnotenoughtosupporthisdesign.Hewrotetothegovernmentabouthisplanandwasgiven￡2,500tostartwith,asumworthmuchmoreinthosedaysthanitisnow.
BabbagecontinuedhisworkinLondonforfouryears.Thenhishealthbrokedown,andhehadtotakealongholidayabroad.WhenhereturnedtoLondonin1828,hewasattheendofhisresources.Manybillsremainedunpaid.Hischiefassistantandco-workersquarreledwithhimandleftwithmanyexpensivetools.Foroneyearnoworkwasdone.Duringthisperiod,Babbage,whosemindwasalwaysactive,suddenlythoughtofacompletelynewideaforthemachine.Herushedtomeetthegovernmentofficialstoexplainhisnewidea.Butthistime,theywereunwillingtohelphim.Foreightyears,theyrefusedtosaywhethertheywantedthemachineornot,andtheirfinalanswerwas“No”.
From1828to1839,BabbageheldthepositionofprofessoratCambridgeverysuccessfully.Buthisgreatestworkwastheunfinishedcalculatingmachinewhichstoodcoveredindustinhishouse.Itwasthebeginningofthemoderncomputer.
