•Entriesfromartistswhohavesubmittedinpreviousyearsarewelcomed.

Onesummerduringhighschool,mymomvolunteeredmetohelpGrandparesearchourfamilytree.Great,Ithought,imagininghoursspentpawingthroughdusty,rottingboxesandlisteningtoboringstoriesaboutpeopleIdidn'

Intruth,Grandpadidn’twanttolimitmyworktojustresearch,hopingtoalsopreserveourfamilymemories.He'

ddiscoveredacomputerprogramthathelpsdigitallyscanoldpicturesandletterstopreservetheircontentsbeforetheycrumblefromoldage.Grandpawantedmetohelphimconnedthescannerandsetupthecomputerprogram.Hecouldtypedocumentsandsendemails,buthadneverusedascanner.

Soonafter.Ibecamefascinatedwithmyrelatives’lives.IaskedGrandpatotellthestorybehindeverypictureandletterscanned.Thestories,whichturnedoutnottobeboringatall,helpedmenotonlyunderstandbutalso

relatetomyrelatives.IbecamesohungryformoreinformationthatGrandpaneededadditionalpropstokeepmesatisfied.Heshowedmeachestfilledwithrandomstuff,allcoveredinchest.

Perusingthroughtheirbelongings,IfeltIwasopeningawindowintotheworldofmyrelatives,aworldlongsincegone.GrandpashowedmeabundleoflettershehadsenttoGrandmafromthefrontlinesofWorldWarIIandIcouldalmostsmellthegunpowder.Iturnedthepagesofmygreat-grandmother’srecipebookandcouldpicturehercookinginherkitchen.Allofthepeoplewhohadbeenmerelynamestomenowhadfacestomatch.

Later.Grandpaadmitted,“Iprobablycouldhavedonethisprojectmyself.

Ijustwantedsomeonetoshareitwith.”Ican’tthankhimenoughforsharingtheexperienceandmakingmeappreciatethefamilymemberswhohavemademethepersonIam.IwillcherishfamilymemoriesandhopethatsomedayIwillbeabletopassthemdowntomyowngrandchildren.
