Itwouldappearthathistoricaldiscourseinvolvestworegulartypesofshifters.Thefirsttypecompriseswhatwemightcalltheshiftersoflistening.ThiscategoryhasbeenidentifiedbyJakobson,ontheleveloflanguage,withthetermtestimonialaccordingtotheformulaCeCal/Caa2:

Thesecondtypeofshiftercomprisesalltheexplicitsignswherebytheutterer-inthiscase,thehistorian・organizeshisowndiscourse,takingupthethreadormodifyinghisapproachinsomewayinthecourseofnarration:
