Oneprisonerhadbeenbroughtoutofhiscell.HewasaHindu,apunywispofaman,withashavenheadandvagueliquideyes.SixtallIndianwarderswereguardinghimandgettinghimreadyforthegallows.Twoofthemstoodbywithriflesandfixedbayonets,whiletheothershandcuffedhim,passedachainthroughhishandcuffsandfixedittotheirbelts,andlashedhisarmstightlytohissides.Theycrowdedverycloseabouthim,withtheirhandsalwaysonhiminacareful,caressinggrip,asthoughallthewhilefeelinghimtomakesurehewasthere.Buthestoodquiteunresisting,yieldinghisarmslimplytotheropes,asthoughhehardlynoticedwhatwashappening.

6. Wesetoutforthegallows.Twowardersmarchedoneithersideoftheprisoner,withtheirriflesattheslope;twoothersmarchedcloseagainsthim,grippinghimbyarmandshoulder,asthoughatoncepushingandsupportinghim.Therestofus,magistratesandthelike,followedbehind.

Thegallowsstoodinasmallyard.Thehangman,agray-hairedconvictinthewhiteuniformoftheprison,waswaitingbesidehismachine.Hegreeteduswithaservilecrouchasweentered.AtawordfromFrancisthetwowarders,grippingtheprisonermorecloselythanever,halfledhalfpushedhimtothegallowsandhelpedhimclumsilyuptheladder.Thenthehangmanclimbedupandfixedtheropearoundtheprisoner'sneck.
