Oneprisonerhadbeenbroughtoutofhiscell.HewasaHindu,apunywispofaman,withashavenheadandvagueliquideyes.SixtallIndianwarderswereguardinghimandgettinghimreadyforthegallows.Twoofthemstoodbywithriflesandfixedbayonets,whiletheothershandcuffedhim,passedachainthroughhishandcuffsandfixedittotheirbelts,andlashedhisarmstightlytohissides.Theycrowdedverycloseabouthim,withtheirhandsalwaysonhiminacareful,caressinggrip,asthoughallthewhilefeelinghimtomakesurehewasthere.Buthestoodquiteunresisting,yieldinghisarmslimplytotheropes,asthoughhehardlynoticedwhatwashappening.
