ThefirstbeginningofpermanentsettlementinNorthAmericawerenearlyahundredyearsafterColumbus’sfirstvoyage.TheEnglishmanSirWalterRaleighclaimedthewholeofNorthAmericaforEnglandcallingitVirginia.In1585hesentasmallgroupofpeoplewholandedinRoanokeIsland,buttheystayedonlyforayearandthenwentbacktoEnglandwithanotherexpeditionledbyDrakein1587.Asecondgroupwholandedin1587hadalldisappearedwhenafurtherexpeditionarrivedin1590.

ThefirstpermanentsettlementinNorthAmericawasin1607.EnglishcapitalistsfoundedtwoVirginiacompanies,asouthernonebasedinLondonandanorthernonebasedinBristol.ItwasdecidedtogivethenameNewEnglandtothenorthernarea.ThefirstsettlersinVirginiawerelittlemorethanwageslavestothecompany.Allweremenandtheexperimentwasnotverysuccessful.Manydied.Thosewhosurvivedlivedinmiserableconditions.By1619thecolonyhadonlyathousandpeople.

Operatingamajorairlineisessentiallyamatteroffindingtherightmixofpassengers.Theairlinesneedtofillupthebackendoftheirwide-bodiedjetswithlowfarepassengers,withoutforgettingthatthefrontendshouldbefilledwithpeoplewhopaysubstantiallymorefortheirtickets.

Itisnocoincidencethatthetwomajorairlinebankruptcieswereamongthecompaniesspecializingincheapflights.Butlowfaresrequireconsistentlyfullaircrafttomakeflightseconomicallyviable,andintherecentrecessionthevolumeoftraffichasnotgrown.Equallythelargenumberofairlinesjostlingfortheavailablepassengershascreatedahugeexcessofcapacity.Thenetresultofexcesscapacityandcut-throatcompetitiondrivingdownfareshadbeentopushsomeairlinesintocollapseandleavemanyothershoveringonthebrink.
